Frederick. LIQUOR FINES IN GOURT TOTAL §700 (Continued fromr First Page) not guilty to selling, keeping with in- tent to sell and making liquor, but changed his plea to guilty on the sec- ond count today. Prosecutor Joseph G. Woods nolled the other two charges. Wohinz took the witness stand in his own behalf and explained that the stuff was on hand for personal use. He was reminded that his plea indi- cated the facts to be otherwise. The accused then admitted his liquor ac- tivities and accepted a $200 fine. Berlin Police Assist During the series of raids in Ber- lin yesterday, the authorities learned that Louis Castellino of 85 Mill street was identified with the rum ring and his arrest by the local police followed. He pald $200 and costs. In the Kowaski case, Martin Regu- la testified that he had purchased a bottle of whiskey at the store con- ducted by the accused and had paid 75 cents for it. He turned it over to Policeman Thomas Feeney and the arrest of Edward Kowaski followed In court last Saturday it was proved that the store was the property of Kowaski's wife. Accordingly, Prose- cutor Woods issued a warrant for her arrest. Questions by Judge W. I". Mangan, who represented the accused, brought out that the young man from whom the bottle is alleged to have been pur- chased, went outside the store to get the whiskey. Clerk Bootlegger, Claimed The accused said she had no knowl- edge that her clerk was bootlegging and had not given him permission to conduct his business through her store. Prosecutor Woods contended that it was a ‘“miserable attempt” to cover up a nefarious practice of selling liquor in abundance. In view of unusual circumstances, Justice Morris D. Saxe, who heard the evidence in the case, imposed a lesser penalty, that of $100 and costs. There was no appearance by the accused and evidence seized by the police in a raid at the York Hotel cafe was condemned. Assault Cases Roman Shotis, charged with drunk- enness and breach of the peace, paid a fine of $15 and $10. He was ar- rested by Policeman John O’'Brien yesterday afternoon following a dis- turbance on Union street. Mrs. Jos- ephine Tarlon reported that he had assaulted her. The policeman testi- fled that he found the man in a drunken condition. Michael Romanich and Michael Lucheck, were charged with assault- ing one another. The latter was dis- charged and the former dismissed with a suspended judgment. The trouble took place at the corner of Grove and Broad streets last night. After learning the facts, Policeman W. P. McCue placed both under ar- rest. . Supposed Pauper, Frozen _To Death; Had Much Money Haverstraw, N. Y., Jan. 30—Charles Degrall, old and shabbily dressed, was found frozen to death in a shack on the outskirts of Haverstraw yester- day. Little children of the town al- ‘ways thought he was a penniless tramp, but his bankbooks showed he had $4,000. The coroner foungd $120 in the old man's pockets.
