10 LOGAL GIRL BACK FROM VIRGIN ISLES Miss Cora Holmes Has Interesting Business Trip to Indies Miss Cora M. Holmes of 349 Rocky Hill avenue, daughter of Mr, and Mrs J. W. Holmes and a sister of former Bafety Commissioner Frank H. Holmes, has just returned from a trip to the Virgin islands wi she went in the Interests of the IPuller Brush company of Hartford. Not only is Miss Holmes' trip noteworthy hecause by going to these islands she hecame the pioneer woman to seek business development there, but also because she now enjoys the distinction of be- dng the first representative of uany American firm to Introduce sanitary products of this nature on the islands. Miss Holmes, who is in charge of the group Insurance division of the Hartford firm, left on a trip to south- ern waters for her health last No- vember, She went to San Juan, Porto Rica, and then decided to go on to the Virgin islands. Because there was no regular steamship line running, she had to “rough it and took passage on a tramp Newfoundland fishing smack. Miss Holmes' own story of her trip 1s interesting. At St. Thomas “I arrived at St. Thomas after a most distressing and uncomfortable trip of 756 miles over the Caribbean,"” Miss Holmes said "he fishing smack took two days to travel between San Juan and St. Thomas, zigzagging over the sea according to the wind, -thus covering actually 200 miles. The smack an auxillary, was bought in N foundland and was sailed down to N Juan, taking twenty-cight days to make the trip “The smack had no pass commodations; it was ne up at night, or bunk any place where one wished, The mecals were im- promptu, and were served in rusty tin- ware on a piece of black oilcloth, spread over a hatch on deck. The waves and spray dashed on deck soaking the passengers; namely, a man from New York city and my- self. The sea became so rough the first night out that 1 had to go below and climb into an empty bunk. The only light in the stuffy hold was froma a dingy lantern, which gave out just a glimmer. There was no ventilation, and 1 thought at times that 1 should suffocate. But rather than be washed overboard (the waves were getting higher and higher) I determined to stay where T was. Deacribes City “On arriving at St. Thomas the town was so pretty that I felt repaid for the discomforts 1 underwent. St. Thomas formerly Charlotte Amalia, consists of just a handful of buildings nestled on the mountain-side, in white from head to foot. The sun is most blinding. When it rai comes down at once, and s stops again. 1 think that I prefer the present cold weather in Connecticut to the constant heat of the Virgin islands. “At the hotel where I stayed I SHE IS facing | the Caribbean. The buildings are white | the streets are white, the people dress | “FULL OF PEP” THEY SAY Why is a girl popular? Look around and see what a good time the good Jooking ones have all the time. Men seek them out and ask them to par- ties, dances and entertainments, And notice that it is not the doll-face type veal men like most, but the red-blood- ed girl with “pep” and happy good nature Any girl who is tired and Janguid and has a poor complexion and dull eyes can improve her con- dition and be far happier if she will simply take Gude's Pepto-Mangan until put her blood into good Ited bolod means “full of “full of life' usually means de's Pepto-Mangan and see h hetter you fecl. 'ear White People “As I went to the islands on a business trip, my first impression was that some of the Ifuller brushes would be in little demand. The population of the islands is about 8,000, five per cent of which is white. I visited two of the islands during the eleven days I was there and sold $410 worth of brushes. I consider that that is a good record a initation on the islands is still in its infancy. Most of my sales were made to the white population. The company considers that the trip was more or less of an experiment.” SOLDIER BONUS BILL Work Will Be Started At Once Framing Of Mecasure In Washington, Jan.
