OPPOSES CUTS FOR FIRE DEPT. MEMBERS Gommission Points Out That Men Are Entitled to Consideration At the meeting of the fire board Jast night, a resolution was adopted requestifg that the salaries of firemen be continued as at present, and that the salary of the chief en- &ineer be increased from $2,675 to $3,200. as follows: 3 “To His Honor the Mayor Common Council. “Gentlemen:—- “The board of fire commissioners respectfully begs leave to recommend that the pay of the members of the fire department, from the chief down, be not subjected to any reduction. The board feels that if the contem- plated reduction of 10 per cent. is carried out, gross injustice and lack of appreciation will be shown by your body, by thus applying that reduction to the members of the fire depart- ment. “The board bases this recommenda- tion upon these grounds: First, the employment is hazardous, and thus the scale of pay cannot bhe compared to men in other classes of work. Sec- ond, the hours of duty. Third, though the cost of living has come down somewhat, the fireman's pay was not affected by the inflated war- time pay of other classes of employ- ment. Fourth, scales of pay in other cities in Connecticut: Hartford and New Haven have the two-platoon, with the same scale of pay as here with no two-platoon; Bridgeport has the two-platoon with a slightly lower scale; Stamford with the two-platoon, $4.80, $4.40, $4.11 per day; Middle- town, with the two-platoon, $5.00 straight per day. “The board feels that until the two- platoon system is instituted the pres- ent pay should be continued. The board submits that by not reducing the present pay of the members, your body will show full recognition of the present high efficiency of the depart- ment. “WILLIAM C. KRANOWI To Buy New Hose. The matter of the purchase of fire hose was taken up at the meeting, and a number of bids were submitted. "T'he commissioners have received excellent reports of the brand of hose made hy the successful bidder. Building for Repairman.
