Fred- PATROLMAN DRAWS LONG SUSPENSION Dohertv Of for The Montbs ~10 Cut Supernumeraries’ Pay sUM 6 Store Announcements Supernumerary Policeman William F. Doherty was suspended for three months by the board of police com- missioners last night, after a hearing on charges brought by Max Mexler, a Broad street storekeeper. During the hearing somc interest- ing testimony was given by the com- plainent, his wife and daughter. There were scveral other = witnesses called to support the charges of the complainant. . Mexler was first to be heard. He said that Policeman Doherty had made a practice of coming into his store and remaining from 10 to 46 minutes at different times, During these periods he would take off his coat and seat himself in a chair, after he had taken whatever he chose of candy, chewing gum, cigars or cookies, the witness said. ~While on these ‘'rest periods,”” Doherty had a 9-year-old hoy on guard at the door, watching for the appearance of the +sergeant, Mexler said. The complainant said that he had never asked the policeman to pay for the stuff he took, because the latter reminded him that ‘policemen were not supposed to pay for such stuff.” Called Woman Stingy. The testimony of Mrs. Mexler was along similar lines: She sald that both she and her husband had dis- cunsed the matter of asking the po- liceman to pay for goods he took. She said that each had requested the other to carry out the task, and after considerable ‘‘passing the buck,” she had been prevailed upon to do so. Mrs. Mexler said that upon speaking to the officer about payment, he re- Notice P r— Take notice tHat the undersigned has been appointed a Committce by the CHy Court of the City of New DBritain to sell real estate, and that by virtue of an order of said Court I will sell the following de- scribed property, subject to a mortgage in the amount of Seven Thousand Dollars ($7,000), by public auction on the premises in the rear of Turner Hall, Arch Btreet, New Britain, Conn, on February 15, 1922 at two o'clock p. m. He sald that he usually went into Mexler's store once or twicé a week. He had seen the accused policeman there on a few occasions, but he wn - atandink leisurely around. Just Sweet Cider. The accused patrolman admitted that he had been in the Mexler place on gne or more occasions. He also admitted that he had drank cider there, which he claimed was sweet. He also admitted playing the punch- board. Sergeant George C. Ellinger that he had found Doherty in the place on only one occasion, and the policeman told him at that time that he entered to procure something to eat. sald Looked Prearranged. Three other witnesses yere called in defense of Doherty, but in the opinion of the board their testimony was a rehearsed affair; the character of the testimony being to the effect that they had seen the policeman purchase cookies. Discounts Mexler's Story. The board took up the matter of the offense, and as it appeared to the members, the Mexlers were actuated in their charges against the officer by a spirit of spite. ‘While the police- man may have been gullty of the charges as made by the complainant, no action was taken until after Mexler had been convicted in police court for violation of the liquor law, for which he paid a $50 fine for selling hard clder. The board felt that the policeman had been guilty of a serlous infraction of the rules of the department, but, believing that Mexler was ‘actuated by spite, the offense was somewhat discounted, and the vote was for the above suspension. To Reduce Supernumerari Pay. A discussion was held on the budget for the coming flscal year. It was recommended that the pay of the su- pernumerary police be reduced from $5 a day to $4. The board feels that the work of a supernumerary officed is only a side line with them, and also that such policemen are only in a sense undergoing a preliminary stage of experience to fit him for a regular patrolman berth. Want New Service Car The need of a new service car was talked over by the board. The pres- ent car in use is a 1918 model, which is showing the need of repair, and rather than use money for parts and repairs, the board deems it advisable to contain in the budget an allow- ance for a new automobile.
