Neale declared that H. H. Huebel, San I'rancisco, who was head lines- man, should not have called Stein, W. and J. star offside on a play from which Brenkert W, and J. back car- ried the ball across the California line. Other officlals do not agree with {Neale however and say that Huebel blew his horn, which called the off- side, even before Brenkert had reach- ed the line of scrimmage in his suc- cessful dash for the goal. U'nder the rules the ball could not be brought back until the play was completed. Huebel is president of the Pacific coast football association. MAY AMEND LAW Assemblyman Brundage Plans to Offer Measure That Will Allow Clubs Use of Armories. Albany, N. Y., Jan. 5.—Legislation designed to provide for professiona; boxing in state armorles: probably will be submitted to the present session of the New York legisiature, it was an- nounced last night by Assemblyman Arthur E. Brundage, republican, of |Orange. He has under considera- tion an amendment to the present law whereby the state athletic com- mission would be compelled to license clubs dgsiring to stage bouts in armories after they have met the re- quirements of the licensing provisions of the law. Mr. Brundage had charge of the bill reorganizing the commis- sion a year ago. Assemblyman Brundage |he believed boxing should be per- mitted in state armories. He added that in some of the up-state cities there are no suitable places in which to put on boxing bouts other than in the armorie for said that 11, HUGHES COACH SOX. nerican title holder, n said of the one and he nehman had in ond round, when 1l smash, Carp's 4 | crashed against | he movement of the I3 ht that he was r a moment, hut | inflicted a heavy pun- | his adversary. ALLEGES OFFICIAL ERRED IN PENAI'ZING CAPT. STEIN — MAJOR LEAGUES TO OPEN SEASON APRIL 2 — BOOKMAKERS ARRESTED S— SURPRISE SPRUNG BY LOCAL TEAM Hardware City Five Downs Bran- ford Battery 85 to 33 The Hardware City Five sprung the surprise of the season last night at Branford, when the crack Branford Battery quintet was downed in a speedy contest 35 to It was the first defeat of the season for the team headed by “Hap" Harmon, the former Wesleyan star. A crowd that jammed the armory witnessed the fray, and time and again, the uproar of excite- ment shook the structure. Teamed with Harmon, was Merritt Taylor, the former New Britain High school star, Another noteworthy in the Branford lineup was I'rank McGowan, the base- ball player who was recently pur- chased by Connie Mack from the New- ark elub of the International league. Angelo, last year with the New Haven Kaceys, was also in the Branford line- up. First Defeat for Branford The Battery team has been traveling along at a rapid clip this season, de- feating all opponents with ease. After learning of the walloping the locals sustained at the hands of the All- Collegians on Tuesday night, no thought of a defeat was entertained by the Branford team or its followers. The Hardware City F'ive passed the ball in a manner that was pretty to watch. Tedder Kilduff and Bill K Wal- thers were all over the floor, and their work stood out in prominence. The defensive play of Larson and Jack Pelletier was excellent. Pelletier held the great Taylor to one field basket in each half. Harmon always a big scor- er, had his troubles with Chief Lar- son, resulting in the ex-collegian reg- istering but four goals. Larson in turn dropped in three for the locals. Harry Ginsberg at center, did a good night's job, getting one field goal, and his defensive play proved a thorn in the side of the Branford five. Good Work by Walthers New Britain jumped into the lead at the start, when Walthers scored two neat field goals. The locals were never headed. Kilduff scored 7 field goals and one foul, his work attracting the plaudits of the crowd. In the last two minutes of play, Branford tried the score when McGowan Jocated the draperies, but a fine shot from the side by Bill Walthers clinched the victory for New Britain. The summary: H. C.
