BAR FIXTURES GOING BYE BYE Det lon May «Witness Wholesale Destruction Detroit, Mich,, Dec. 30.—Dozens of mahogany, walnut and teakwood bars, tables and fixtures from saloons rald ed In the Detroit district since the advent of prohibitlon, a display of highly polished and costly wood val ued at upwards of §300,000, may he chopped into firewood and distribut. ed among Detroit's poor. Or these bars and tables, over which thous- wtds of elbows have been crooked and that in years past have been made to glisten by constant applica- tion of towels in the hands ot white aproned attendants may be convert- ed into benches for august judges or into pulpits behind which clergymen will stand and the arguments for a saloonless world, While state and city prohibition forces are making up their minds which course to pursue in disposal of the uable store of wood, rats and mice are playing havoe with the bars and tables, that have been dumped in a heap near one of the city's police stations. Under a state ficials confiscate volce law prohibition of- the fixtures in any establishment found to be dispensing llquors, Lacking a place to store these articles the officials have piled them in a vacant place outdoors, thus creating what the police call the city's “mahogany dump.” Judge William M. Heston of Re- corder's court has decreed the collec- tion be cut into fire wood and given te the poor. Others propose the ter soaked pile be salvaged and tha the wood be used to make pulpits and judges' benches. For display purposes tha wood is worth a fortune but for firewood it is no better than the more plebeian varjaties. City offieials say that to cut the bars into stove wood would cost more than it would be worth for that purpose. Therefore the proposal of Judge Heston will not be put into ef- fect, for a time, at least. While a solution is being reached the owne? of the property on which the “mahogany dump” is locatell s trafitically urging the = officials “take it away"” as he nceds the and also because the “dump’ has come the home of scores of rats.
