Benson, president of the Jjunior achievement branch of the Eastern States league, at Springfield and Abram Buol, vice-president of the New Britain Machine company and presi- dent of the Chamber of Commerce, at a meeting of the local junior achieve- ent council at the Chamber of Com- merce rooms yesterday afternoon. Withont notice to the majority of workers, Mr. Benson suddenly arrived in the city yesterday atternoon and Mrs. G. A. Porter, acting president ci the council, called the meet'ng for 4 o’clock in the Chamber of Commerce rooms. For this reason only about one-third of those actively intcrested in the work were present. ¢ Mr. Buol, who is chairman cf the junior achievement comniittee of the Hartford County Manufacturers asso- ciation, and who was the first mover in organizing the local coundl spoke for a few minutes on the heed of self sacrifice and the forgetting of person in the work. He said he had no doubt but that great work could be accom- plished in New Britain through the Jjunicr achievement council but that it means considerable sacrifice on the part of the members. He expressed himself as being decidedly opposed tc the sug- gested plan to make the council a closed organization confined to actual teachers of classes. He stated that all civic organiza- tions should be invited to become affil- jated In the movement, and devoted considerable time to telling of the interest of Rotary clubs with this movement. He said its primary ob- Ject is to help establish organizations like the Boys’ club, the Y. W. C. A. the Y. M. C. A, etc., und asked why the Boy Scout executive was not in- vited in. Many important suggestions were made but it being an informal meet- ing, no action was taken. It is likely Porter will call a meeting within two weeks, Superintendent Marshall Cook of the Boys' club, hav- ing offered his building for the pur- pose, when committges will be appoint- ed, by-laws submitted for further con- sideration and the council get down to a working basis. Plans are being considered for a committee to try to arrange for a joint: meeting of the Chamber oi Com- merce and Rotary clubs, when the council will put on a demonstration of the work. Efforts also will be made to approach Miss Greta Brown, librar- ian at the New Britan inetitute and have her follow the action taken in other cities and vcombine a junior achievement with the children’s book week, the week of November 13, K.
