THURSDAY, OCTOBER 20, 5921. I e e —— BROWN IS FINED $200 IN GANAAN New Britain Driver Heavily Fined for Transporting Beer Frank E. Brown, truck driver of 240 Smalley street, ,was fined $200 and costs by Justice of the Peace George W. Ford in the town court of Canaan last night on the charge of transporting liquor of prohibitive alzohol content. The fine amounted to $270 and his truck and its con- tents were confiscated. It will be remembered that Brown was taken in tow by the state police on the state road in Canaan on the night of October 4, and his truck and 125 cases 'of beer, which he was car- rying in'it, were confiscated. Samples of the stuff were sent to the office of state prohibition Director Mackenzie, to be analyzed. It was found to con- taln almost 2 per cent of alcohol, and the drastic fine imposed on the driv- er shows that the prohibition‘director | and the state policg are determined to stop the transporiftion of real beer under the guise of near beer. Investigations are being made to ascertain the source of the beer, and also to discover whether the stuff orizinally left its ‘starting point as near beer and if alcohol Was added to 1t or not. According to Brown, he v/as kired by A. J. Hagearty, pro- prietor of the Spring Bottling Works of this city, to transport the load of heer to Pittsfield, Mass: Hagearty, he said, received the stuff in barrels trom ‘the New Haven Bottling Works and bottled it at his plant here. It cannot be determined as yet whether there will be any further prosecutions in the case of Brown, until the investigations of -the state Jolice are completed and the party is found who was responsible for the unlawful amount of alcohol in the veer, i HERRICK ON JOB. Mexico City, Oct.20.—American *‘jazz devils” have come to Mexico City and have made their syncopation popular but theater-going Mexicans have failed to appreciate an American musical comedy as recently presented by a com- pany of ‘‘girly-girly girls direct from Broadway,” to use the words of the in- spired press agent. The company ap- peared here as one of the attractions of the Centennial celebration. Adver- tised as a bit of Broadway transplanted to Mexico, sthe girls were intended to add a bit of pepper and zest to the month of flesta, but, after a few nights, interest lagged and the show concluded its runs without breaking any attend- ance records. It was not because the attractida was below the standard of any similar show in the United States. Old-timers in the American colony hefe have long declared that American musical comedy will not pay in Mexico and their pre- dictions ‘appear to have been subtsan- tiated in the recent attempt. RELIEF MEASURES i g Premier Would Extend Great Britain’s Credit System London, Oct. 20.—Proposals for the extension of Great Britain’s trade credit system and for assistance in raising| capital for industrial undertakings as measures for the relief of the unem- ployed made by Premier Lloyd George in the house of commons yesterday have been well received by representatives of large industries. There has been little criticism of the details of the.cab- inet’s plan, and the scheme is regard- ed as sound and workable. Commit- tees are being established to deal with the premier's proposals. It is understood the government of- fered to leave the management of the credit system to leading bankers but the latter decided it could be managed bet- | ter by & committee which would work under the auspices of the overseas trade defartment. The bankers, have given assurance of future assistance, how- ever, and conferences held so far have been of the most cordial nature, TURKS ARE DEFEATED Greeks Are Successful After Battle of Two Days. During the last five months, approximately 250,000 meals ‘were served at an average cost of about 48 cents each. The cafeteria was the first ever es- tablished in any national park and it lhas been so successful that other parks have written for details of its opera- tions. It is probable that the idea will be copied. Secretary Fall of the Department of the Interior, while here this summer, became a tray carrier at the cafeteria and declared he thought the establish- ment was a step in the right direction to provide good accommodations at the lowest possible prices. Food served in the cafeteria is the same quality as that served in Yosem- ite’s American plan resorts charging as high as $7.50 and $10.00 per day. The prices differ little from those in cafe- terias in San Francisco and Los Angeles The food is sold at cost, as employes of the National park company make up about half the cafeteria’s patrons, Scores of campers came to Yosemite this year, pitched their tents along the Merced river and took their meals at the cafeteria, PA.
