GIVES GIRL DIME FOR SINGING Standard Oil Magnate Applauds ““Moth- er 0’ Mine” on Hudson Ferry— Asks Her To Sing Again Tarrytown, N. Y., Oct. 15.—John D. Rockefeller was so pleased with the singing of a 5-year-old girl on the Hud- son River ferryboat between this town and Nyack today that he gave her two dimes, and told her that she was ‘‘the prettiest little singer’’ he ever had seen. He applauded loudly as she sang, and waved back to her as his automobile sped away. Mr. Rockefeller was crossing the riv- er after a motor ride in Rockland Coun- ty, and as the ferryboat left the slip the fiddlers on the boat struck up the tune ‘‘Mammy' Five-year-old Vir- ginia Denike was in an automobile with her parents on the way home from @ Rockland County wedding, and she sang the words to the song. Applause from Mr. Rockefeller. Seeing a chance to make a hit with a new attraction, the fiddler walked over to the Denike automobile and ask- ed whether the young lady would sing again. She would, with pleasure, and her' choice was ‘‘Mother O’ Mine.”” Two dimes from Mr Rockefeller this time, who told his secretary to tell the singer that she was the prettiest he had seen or heard. ““Thank you very much,” chirped Miss Virginia. “I'll keep them al- ‘ways—auntil I get rich.”” Virginia’s father, Ralph Denike, owns a garage in Hastings where he sells only Standard Oil products. Reports of Virginia's success at win- ning dimes from Mr. Rockefeller, in- stead of the usual coppers, with an ad- monition to save them, brought many photographers to the Denike house. The. first of them arrived just in time to see Virginia, who was making mud pies in the yard, swing a right hand on the nose of her playmate, James O'Grady. The blow successfully quelled any mas- culine desire James might have had for domination of the mud pie kitchen. “Is she often that way?”’ a photo- grapher asked Mr. Denike, “0, yes,” was the reply, ‘‘a regular prima donna.’” Virginia said she was going to attach the dimes to a ribbon and wear them around her neck, but in late afternoon the lure of the ice cream cone became strong and late in the afternoon her mouth bore suspicious signs of a predi- lection for chocolate ice cream. —DENTISTS— A.
