Fxchanges 2 763,200,000 Balanc 500,000 ENRIGHT IS AGGUSED Ex-Woman Police Commissioner in New. York Says He Permitted Evils to Exist in City. New York, Oct. 4.—Mrs. Ellen O'Grady who resigned as fifth reputy police commissioner last December told the Meyer legislative committee investigating city affairs that her resignation folowed ‘“‘persecution by Police Commissioner Enright” ing throughout her term of office. She said Commissioner Enright hampered her activities as chief of the depart- ment's welfare work and interfered when she sought to prosecute moving picture houses because of immoral conduct within them. She also charged that the commissioner’s El witl' former Police Inspector I P. Hughes blocked an attempt on the part of policewomen to arrest “two very wealthy men who had taken two seventeen year old girls into their apartment where they misconducted themselves,” and that her persecution was intensified after ‘this incident. This mornin Alcorn remarked that there had no arrests ‘‘as yet,” but a question as to whether plied that there are to be more' rests, said: “It is notunlikely.” s Jand family It is known that state policem Jare almost continuously stationed this city and, or less wel known persons are being kept under strict observations by the sleuths. May Be Local Man It is also rumored on very g0od authority that another well known young man, occupying a semi-public position in this city, has been men- tioned in such a way that be may be brought into the case as a material witness. It is reported that this man, who the state police are undersood to have reason to believe could unfold tales of additional evidence against the rum runners, may be taken into cus- tody very soon on a warrant assert- ing that his arrest is necessary as a material witness. It has been intimated that this young man may be able to throw a considerable amount of light on some alleged financial transactions inyolving not only the Giardino brothers, but also, possibly, Richard- son and several others who are deep- ly implicated. “ Looks Bad for Richardson As time flits on in the Richardson case, the doubts of many as to the innocence of the accused detective sergeant scem to be dispelled. This extend- | is borne out in a statement made today by a well known official who has been rather reluctant, since the arrest of Richardson, to believe him guilty. The bringing in of the Giardino brothers, McAuliffe and Harris vy terday, has caused this man to feel now that the detective sergeant has been in the ring, and in it extensive- Iy. May Have Given “Tip” One of the local police depart- ment ftold a reporter that on several occasion in the past, policemen were ‘tipped off"" that the Harris truck was headed for New Britain with-a load of contraband liquers, and steps were taken on these occasions to capture the truck and those in charge. It was always with disappointment that the police waited for the arrival of, the Obsiousifly the run runsers had been warned #i advance. From the reported statements made by Harris vesterday afternoon, therc vould seem to he little doubt now, that it was on the advice of tips furniched by Richardson that the truck whe always kept from reaching this city when there was danger.
