DETECTIVE BURNS 70 START NEW SCHOOL Curricnlom for Slenths Will Be ‘ Greatly Varied New York, Bept. 30.—Department of Justice agents are going to school to read books and learn how to be de- tectivee. The curriculum of the school, just started by the bureau ot investigation, includes study of such technicalities as the laws of search and arrest, rudi- ments of evidence, righta of citizens and preparation of cases for prosecu- tion. Willlam J. Burns, chief of the bu- reau, explained that establishment of tho school was the first step to do away with hit-or-miss methods, ‘“We are golng to teach our men to get results,” he said, “Blipshod inves- tigation, making discoveries only by chance, is going to stop. And men who ——— e cunnot be taught to be effective will ba dropped, “Federal investigators are going to loarn right away that are not to flash thelr chields for their own amusement; and they ure going to learn that the real object of this bu- reau is to protect citizens and to pre- vent erime, not just to arrest crooks. We are not going to set the wosld afire, but wo are going to give this country a detective service of which its citisens oan be as proud as the English are of Sootland Yard.” Bdward J. Brennan, division super- intendent of the bureau, asserted that, to permit department officials to got a line on their men, recruits would put in a month of study before being placed on active duty, “Otherwise he would be helpless when he started ouc,’’ he continued, “If without training he were sent out to investigate a bank robbery, he would not evep know where to besin, He would not know how to proceed with a search without getting into legal difMculties. He would not know where the state and federal jurisdie- tions overlapped. ““That 1ast is one of the most com- plicated points of all, For example, a robbery on Park Row is a matter for the state authorities, but & rob- bery 20 feet away in the post office HARTFORD Ei it ] B | it % ¢ | | I § 1 i i i ] £ £ H BEST DISPLAYS OF WOMEN'’S SUITS — AT POPULAR PRICES — Unusually fascinating are our new suits.
