M!IAN MAJOR OROHESTRA ¢ —Nine Pleces— CLOUCESTER MUCH INCENSED Fishermen Believe Protest Should be Made Against Barring of Mayflower From Race. Gloucester, Mass., Sept. 21.—Not all of Gloucester is in agreement with the American race committee in accepting without protest the disbarment of the Boston schooner Mayflower from this year's races for the international fish- ermen’s cup. Mayor Wheeler, himself a designer of boats, speaking at a meeting of the committee last night, sald a mistake was made when the committee acquiesced in the elimina- tion by the Canadian cup truetees of the vessel that was named as the American defender. “Why eliminate the Mayflower?"* he asked, after reterring to the fact that it was contended she was more nearly yacht than fisherman, “when a skilled Nova Scotian designer laid down the lines' for the speedy vessel which has been buflt as this year's Canadian challenger. Down East they must think that we of Gloucester are a lot of chumps." Others present replied that the May- flower violated the spirit of the deed of gift of the trophy. Captain George H. Peeples, president of the master malners’ association, then joined with Mayor Wheeler in his protest. “I know personally that practically all the masters and fishermen at this port are in favor of sending the Mayflower down thera to defend the cup against the Bluenose,”” he said. Others took lssue with this state- ment and the committee then returned to the work of planning for a financ- ing of the elimination race on October 12 at which a boat will be selected to take the place of Mayflower as the American defender.
