GARDNER, BANDIT, MAKES 4TH ESCAPE Gets Away During Baseball Game and Swims Mile Taconia; Wash., Sept. 6.—Roy Gard- ner, trajn bandit, who escaped yester- day from the federal prison at Me- Neil Island, near here during a break in which one prisoner was killed, ap- parently has reached the mainland, one mile away, prison guards and others declared today when their search of the island had failed to re- veal the missing man. Gafning the outside of the enclos- ure Gardner stampeded a herd of cat- tle and using the animals as a barrier trom the guards, reached the woods which skirt the island. There all trace of him was lost. The guards set fire to the woods in an attempt to drive him out. His exploit occurred in the presence of Heoar H. Votow, superintendent of federal prisons and brother-in-law of President Harding. Votaw arrived yosterday morning at McNeil Island on an inspection tour. Gardner is 34 years old.
