H., July 26.—Presi- dent Harding will be far away from the madding crowd when he comes to the summer home of Secretary Weeks here next week. The Weeks lodge is at the top of Mount Prospect two thousand feet above sea level and 1.240 feet higher than this bustling little border town. It commands a view of all the principal peaks of the White Mountains and also of the Connecticut river with its right bank in New Hampshire and Vermont on its left. The view from the observa- tion tower which Secretary Weeks has set up near his lodge has been declared to be the most satisfactory in’ all the mountain country. It will be no new scene to the president, however. As a fellow sen- ator with Mr. Weeks he was a mem- ber of a party that came here from Washington several years and en- joyed a stay at the Mount Prospect lodge. In 1918 he came here again as a Chautauqua lecturer and re- newed his acquaintance with the peaks, notches and intervales At Secretary Weeks'.place the pres- ident will have a charge from the outdoor camp life which marked his last week-end. Instead he will find a lodge equipped at much expense to and guests. Including his summer home in the town where he was born a farmer's boy, Mr. Weeks set up a two-story structure atop the mcuntain with seven chambers, dining room and kitchen on the first floor and on the second, one large room with two fire- places and four balconies. He cwns the whole mountain, ex- cept for a single estate on the east slope where former Governor Samuel W. McCall of Massachusetts has his summer home. Up the side of the mountain the secretary built a mod- ern road that gives ready access from the town, -three miles distant, to his lodge. It is not only a summer place but a farm center. Secretary Weeks has been at Pros- pect mountain only once this season, and the lodge is at present:unoccu- pied. FOUR MEN DIE FROM DRINK OF COLCHICUM Break Into Shipment From Chemists on Supposition That They Arce Getting Wine. Chicago, July 26.—Six m~n work- ing in the Illinois Centrai freight house discovered a paper carton la- belled “Wine—34 per c2ni. It was part of a shipment from Fa-ke. Davis & Co., Detroit chemists, 9 New Or- leans. The men prepared [.r a Bac- chanalian feast. They drank three of the twelve bottles in the ~arton. They used tin cups from the ice cooler. Foar of them died in agony, the re- maining two are fighting for their lives. Such was the tragedy disclosed tc- day by the police, who have been working on the poisoning of tne six men since July 12 at the direction of Coroner Peter M. Hoffman. “The men drank winae of colchicum seed,” said Coroner Hoffman. “It can ba bought at any drug-store. An adult dose is a third of a teaspoonful. The six ‘men drank 720 doses. I think the government should prohibit the ship- ment of such drugs bearing ‘Wine® on the labels. They should ba mark- ed ‘Poison’.” Tha four men who died -were Al- bert Sturgis, P. J. Coffey, Thomas Barrett and Michael, Ward. The two survivors are John D. O’'Neil and Wil- liam Sippel. It was O’'Neil who con- fessed today to the breaking open of the drug shipment. ULCERS OF STOMACH; HOW TO TREAT THEM American Osteopaths, in Convention, Told That Prevention is Best Method Cleveland, O., July 26.—The best treatment for ulcers of the stomach, which usually result in cancers is pre- vention, Dr. F. V. Roeback ot Chi- cago declared today before the 25th annual convention of the American Osteopathic association. Ulcers of the stomach are cauded by ‘“slinker- |slouch posture,” he said. | ““When assuming the posture of the ‘slinkerslouch’ ” Dr. Roebeck said, “the back loses its normal curve and the individual becomes round shoul- dered, the chest flat and narrow and | the lower abdomen pouchy and bulg- | ing. “Cancers are usually the after re- sults of Ulgers. Ulcers are due to dis- turbed nourishment of the stomach. “When the wall of the lower abdo- men become sagging, the stomach and intestines naturally must drop: in pro- portion and this results in an undue strain on the ligaments supporting the first part of the intestine. The correct posture should be as- sumed carrying the head and spine erect and the chest well elevated.” Dr. Nettie M. Hurd of Chicago told the delegates that participants in murders, robberies and other crimes often zre unable to resist crime be- cause thev have varicose veins in the last portion of the large intastine. Dyspepsia and heavy feet she said are symptoms of these varicosities. Another osteopathic college is to be founded at Kirksville, Mo., it was stated at the convention. NO EUROPEAN CRUISE. Lisbon, July 26.—A campaign is be- ing conducted by the Seculo, the most wvidely-read newspaper in Portugal, against the freedom allowed to lepers in this country and the effects of the‘r contact with healthy people. Portugal has the sad privilege of possessing the greatest number of lepers in any FEuropean country. Steps are already teing taken to. at least, reduce the danger of contagion inside the hos- pitals. Foreigners who have visited this country are shocked at the sight of lipless, noseless lepers of both sexes Logging in the streets or selling toys and sweets to poor children. The Seculo asserts that one leper boy 1s emploved at milking the cows in a dairy. These facts, added to statements made by leading physicians as to the danger of contagion, have so alarmed “he population that it is thought tha* pablic opinion will force the authori- ties to adopt strenuous measures. , - Dr.. New York, 'July 26.—Diners at an exclusive hostelry on the Hudson above Yonkers for years have enjoyed the beautiful lake view across tha private Zolf course that liea below the hotel terrace. They particularly admired the effect of the sunset on the waters of the lake. But with the advent of an exces- sively hot summer, servants from nearby estates discovered the lake made an excellent swimming hole and repaired there each evening in time to spoil the quiet shimmer of the sun- set on the water by splashing and shouts.
