HURLEY IS ELECTED Former Chief Sleuth of State Police is Chosen to Head Reorganized De- partment as Its Superintendent. Hartford, July 22.—Captain Robert T. Hurley, widely known as the chief detective of the old state police de- partment, was appointed superinten- dent of the reorganized state police department at a meeting of the new commissfon yesterday. He promptly appointed Alden L. McMurtry, chief inspector of the motor vehicle depart- ment, to be captain. The latter was on the general staff of the United States army under General Peyton C. March, during the war, with rank of major. Colonel Ernest L. Isbell, who as provost marshal in the expeditionary forces organized the American mili- tary police in France and England, was elected president of the commis- sion. Motor Vehicles Commissioner Robbins B. Stoeckel was made secre- tary. This is the organization that will have control of the merger of the old state police department and the inspection division of the motor vehicle department. All decisions were made by unanimous votes and Gover- nor Lake immediately gave his ap- proval, as required by the new law, to the superintendent appointed. Captain Hurley will take charge of the new department today, relieving Superintendent Egan, who has tem- porarily directed its activities pend- ing the election of a permanent su- perintendent. He was not a candidate for the appointment,. preferring not to assume the added responsiblities of the merger at his time of life being 67 years old, but having notified the commission of his willingness to re- main in the department in another capacity, he will be assigned to special work.
