HEILMANN MOVES UP AHEAD OF SPEAKER Detroit Outfielder Boosts Average From .409 to_.432 Chicago, July 16.—Harry Heil- mann, the slugging outfielder of the Detrolt Tigers, went on a batting ram- page last week and batted himself imto first place in the race for bat- ting honors in the American league with Tris Speaker, the Cleveland world’'s champions pilot, whq stepped out in front a week-ago. Heilmann hoosted His average to .432, compared with .409 a week ago. Speaker lost 21 points his average dropping from .415 last week to .394, the same figure held by Ty Cobb, the Detroit manager, who has not been in the game the last few weeks be- ceuse of an injury. Tobin of St. Louis is fourth with .375 and Babe Ruth ranks next with .371. | Up to the recent New York-Chicago series Ruth had been unable to get a home run in Chicago this year. Little Dick Kerr who set the “home run king” back during the last in- vasion of the White Sox to New York pitched the final game in Chicago and fell the victim of Ruth’'s bat. Chicago was the last of the American league citles to come in on Ruth’s string. Ruth Has 35 Homers. Ruth is far ahead /of his last sea- son’s record for homers hdving scored 35 circuit drives. He also has scored more runs than any other player in the league having crossed the plate 89 times. Although he has only 106 hits, he leads the league in total bases with 246. George Sisler, the St. Louls star, failed to add to his string of stolen bases during the past week but his 16 thefts continues high. Other leading batters: Severeld, St. Louis, .367. Williams, St. Louis, .364. Veach, Detroit, .358. Sisler, St. Louis, .357. E. Collins, Chicago, .354. Cutshaw Crowding Hornsby. George Cutshaw, the second sacker of the Pittsburgh Pirates is making Roger Hornsby, the St. Louis star, step lively to retain the lead among the National league batters. Cutshaw who boosted himself up to second place a week ago by steady hitting, has increased his position appreciably. hitting .382 week ago. compared with .365 Hornsby slumped a .420. Cy Williams of the boosted himself to third place with an average of .364. Kelly Tops Meusel. George Kelly, the slugger eight points but still retains the lead with Phillies of thel QGiants, again leads “Irish” Meusel of Philadelphia for circuit drive honors. Meusel failed to add to his string during the past week while Kelly drove out his 13th homer. Frisch of New York and Carey of Pittsburgh are having a merry race for the stolen base honors. Carey leads with 23 thefts, while Frisch is one be- hind. Frisch, however, leads the league as a run getter, having crossed the plate 70 times. Other leading’ batters: Grimes, Chicago, .360. Young, New York, .357. Meusel, Philadelphia, .354. McHenry, St. Louis, .352. Mann, St. Louis, .351. Fournier, St. Louls, .346. Maranville, Pittsburgh, .345, CHAMPION WILL BE BUSY Many Exhibition Games arc Planned for Mlle Lenglen in U. S. New York, July 16.—Mlle Suzanne Lenglen, the famous French woman tennis player, who is coming to this country this month, probably will make her first appearance on Ameri- can courts in the women's Metropol- itan championship tournament which opens at the Nassau County clug, Glen Cove, L. I, on August 1. The general run of American wom- an players will prove, tennis experts believe, easy opponents for Mille Lenglen. They regard Mrs. Thomas Bundy, May Sutton and Miss Mary Brown of California former national champions as opponents worthy of the French girl's mettle. Both Mrs. Bundy and Miss Brown are expected to make their eastern debut this season on the courts of the Crescent Athletfc club in Brooklyn on July 25, the opening date of the New York state woman’s champion- ship tournament. Reports from the Pacific coast to eastern tennis authori- ties state that both the Californians are playing as well as at any time during their champlonship careers. Mille Lenglin probably will play 1bout ten exhibition matches. VDIA VS. H TWO TOWNS DESERTED Depression in Copper Mining Indus- try in New South Wales Causes People to Desert Their 01d Homes. Sydney, N. S. W., July 16.—Inactiv- ity in the copper mining industry has ceused the practical desertion of the populations from the towns of Cobar and Broken Hills. & At one time Cobar boasted a popu- lation of several thousand people. Now it is but a collection of bare shacks, with its people gone. Broken Hills, another mining town, that in its heydey had a population of 50,000, is also desolate. Early in 1919, when the town’s products were selling at high figures, the miners struck and remained out two years, during which time the bottom fell from the metal markets. When the miners were ready to return to work, the operators found they could work the mines only at a icss. Owners of the mines told the men wf their problem and offered to work tke properties, without profit, for the sake of the miners, if the men would take wage reductions of about twenty wer cent. The men, although depend- ing upon the government for food, voted down the proposals. It was charged .that radicals led in the move- ment to defeat the return to work, REAL CAVE MEN Missionary Reports Discovering Genu- ine, Living Prehistoric Man in Solo- mon Island Group. London, July 16.—People who are still living in the manner of the Stone Age are found on Rennell Island in the Solomon group, Melanesia, according to Dr, Northcote Deck, a missionary. Dr. Deck says there are only about 500 inhabitants, and because of their isolation, through lack of ship's anchorage, even their dialect has never been studied. The natives only had implements and weapons of stone and wood when Dr. Deck first visited the island. They showed great eagerness to barter home- made articles for anything made of iron. ““The men are great fighters and wrestlers. Their throwing spears have points made of human leg and arm bones, and tipped with a bone splinter designed to break off in the wound,’ says Dr. Deck. ““They seemed to feel keenly the monotony of their isolation and showed a settled melancholy, both in their faces and the cadence of their woices. Their only sort of music, to which they dance, consists in the tuneless beating of a log.” 4 The teeth of flying foxes which swarm in the caves on the island seem to be the only form of currency known CONDITIONS WORSE Population of Kiev in Russia Has Dwindled from 700,000 to a Little Over 100,000—Bolshevists in Control, Warsaw, June 16.—Conditions in Kiev, in the Ukraine, are reported worse than at any time since the trou- bles of Russia began. Word reached Warsaw recently that the population of the city had dwindled to something like 100,000 persons, whereas at the beginning of the war there were approximately 700,000 in- habimsnts. Travelers who have crossed the frontier within the last few weeks, most of them under difficult circumstances, assert that the Bolshevik authorities are again in complete control of the city. At intervals during the spring there were times when the insurrec- tionists held the upper hand. In many villages in the Ukraine the peasants are reported to have organized and driven the Soviets out and the peasants are reported endeavoring to strengthen their anti-Bolshevik organ- ization to prevent interference with thelr farms and villages. Travelers say only a few stores are open in Kiev, one of these being florist’s shop. NEW HOME RUN RECORD. Eveleth, Minn., July 16.—First Baseman Daubert of the local team of the Mesaba Iron Range league, is believed to have set a new record by hitting five home runs in as many times at bat in a game with the Vir- ginia team 'here yesterday. His last home run came in the tenth inning with two men on bases and brought victory for Eveleth, 9 to 6. The five circuit drives were made off Pitcher Dumont, formerly of the Washing- ton American league team. WEST POINT GETS STAR PLAYER.
