A human soul is a wonderful field, which to cultivate takes patience, time and an everlasting faith in human-kind. This is what counts in the leng run, and the work, though largely routine and to some extent monotonous by reason of the steady application de- manded, affords many opportunities for kindness and service and is rich in possibilities for making changes for the better in the lives of men, ‘women, and children coming to the officer’s attention. “As in past years, I am indebted to all those who by their co-operation helped in the work—to the court for the kindness and interest manifested, and to the prosecutor and police de- partment in general for courtesies and aid extended during the year. “Respectfully submitted, “EDWARD C. Mexico City, July 13.—Efforts on the part of the governor of the state of Michocan to impose a mayor of his own choice upon the village of Jacona were met yesterday by armed resistance, and in the ensuing clash several per- sons were wounded, it is said in news- paper dispatches. Catholics residing in the village objected to the mayor chosen by the governor and it is said they were still in control of the place. NO STRIKE SETTLEMENT. San Francisco, July 13.—Proposals to settle the marine strike were voted down yesterday by both the seamen’s union and the marine firemen, water tenders’ and oilers’ union. The action of these two unions, it is said, offsets the favorable vote recorded yesterday by the marine cooks and waiters. ““Woman God Changed”’ FOX’S--THURSDAY WILLIAM HESSE & CO. ECONOMY IS URGED Powder, and BY MAYOR CURTIS| Tells Health Board Taxes Come Slow; Every Cent Must Count Economy in all departments was urged by Mayor Curtis at a meeting of the board of health yesterday after- noon.” The mayor said that on account of present conditions taxes will come in slowly this year and it was adviseable to be as economical as possible. He said the city will need every cent which finds its way into the treasury. The prompt presentation and payment of bills was recommended. He particular- ly asked where the grocery bills were for the city hospital and spoke of the necessity of handing them in every month, On motion of Cimmissioner Hjerpe order books will be purchased for the health department so a check-up can be kept on those who make purchases. Recommendations to be made to the city council were approved relative to the Paige touring car. It was voted to recommend the repair and sale of this car, each department paying its pro rata share towards defraying the costs of repairs. It was voted also to recommend to the council the purchase of a Ford sedan for the health board to cost $832.26. The garbage collector will be paid $7 a head for dead horses, according tol|. a report made by Acting Superintend- ent Griswold, Dr. Griswold also re- ported an improvement in collection methods and sanitation. The report of the committee on milk ordinances will be taken up next meet- ing. Two small bills were laid over un- til next meeting on motion of Dr. Walsh to permit Chairman Zwick ana Commissioner McKee to investigate them. e —— LEAVITT & HAYES, INC.
