Andrews, Scotland, June 20 (By Associated Press)—More than 150 golf players of world renown began the qualifying rounds of the British open golf championship tournament here today. In that number there 17 American professional and amateur golfers. Clarence Hackney of Atlantic City met Walter Hagen former American open champion and J. Burgess op- posed “Jim” Barnes of the Pelham Country club, owing to the peculari- ties of the draw. In addition W. C. Hunt another American was drawn to play against Edward Ray the fam- ous British expert who holds the American open championship. Play was started to the accom- paniment of a stiff northwest wind which added’ to the difficulties of the golfers on both the courses, which were in splendid order, despite the dry spell. The players in each half of the draw played over one course today,and will go over the other 18 holes - tomorrow. Chick Evans of despite a sprained old course in 83. Charles Hoffner, of the Philadel- phia country club completed the first 18 holes in 73. The professional rec- ord for the course, over which he played and the amateur record is 73. Among the best early scores over the Eden course were those of A. H. Taylor of Mid-Surrey, 7. and Angel De La Torre of Madrid, 79. James Braid, of Walton Heath, former open champion, made the course in 78 and William Melhorn of the Shreveport country club did it in 83. ACCUSED MAN A SUICIDE. Leaves Note Saying He Did Not Kill His Wife. New York., June 20.—William Shaw, whose wife was murdered a week ago in the office of the George K. Krier com- pany of Long Island railroad cut and East Ninety-fourth street, in the Canarsie section of Brooklyn, hanged himself to a bedpost and cut his throat yesterday morning. His body was found by a woman who went to his shack in the rear of the Krier com- pany’s offices to call him to breakfast. Beside the body was found this note: I did not kill my wife, but I cannot stand the strain. My brother-in-law, Mr. Hill, will be here soon. Have him arrange for the funeral.” WEATHER PREDICTION.
