The truckman came back without the receipts that the warehouse people should have given him. Williams sent the man to get the receipts, and that's the last we saw of the man “If the Department of Justice wants Willlams it knows where to get him. H > of the depart- ent’'s men this afternoon. The detailed story of how the ma- chine guns got into the East Side was told last night by a person in a posi- tion to know. It seems that last week a gang of strike agitators boarded the East Side and beat up the engine room crew so badly that the latter deserted Hoboken. The East Side, scheduled to sail Monday or Tuesday, had to have an engine room crew and a chief engineer. On Saturday night a giant with an unmistakable brogue applied for the job of chief engineer. He was grabbed by the Cosmopolitan people before they even asked for his name and credentials. “De you want a crew for the en- gine room along with me?’ "ha de- manded. They told him that they wanted nothing else so much as a crew. “I have my own with me,”” said the stranger. ———————————————————————————— Three Big Specials at the Hosiery Dept. According to a member of the crew questioned last night by the depart- ment of justice men, all the new en- gine room crew were Irishmen. Sun- day morning several motor boats drew alongside the East Side. The chief engineer and his men boldly proceed- ed to throw ropes over the side, and the men in the launches tied the bags and boxes thereto. There was no sec- recy affected. The bags and boxes were left strewn across the deck. But one suspicious seaman suspect- ed a bomb plot. He slit a bag, saw a machine gun and decided to inform the Cosmopolitan people. But when the latter and the Customs men came to look the bags were gone. They had been lowered into the bunkers.
