SEEKING WORK HERE | New York, Boston and Towns Nearby Are Represented | The latest development in the “un employment sityation™ is that persons from points as far distant as New York and Beston have made applica- tion to the local Municipal employ- ment bureau for work. Others from nearby towns have come to New Brit- ! ain for the same purpose. It was re- ported today at the bureau that as ‘ many as seven had presented them- selves in one day. Today's records, as estimated, show | ' { that 20 new applications are coming in every day: 2,000 applications have been made to date; between five and six hundred have been given work; over 100 persons have been “checked | up” thoroughly, and the financial condition of many more, and extent to which there is actugl want have been looked into in numbrous cases. Facts Misrepresented. It has been found that many of the applicants have misrepresented their financial condition. One man had a bank balance of $2,600, another of $2,000, another owned a $5,000 house which bore a mortgage. On the other hand one applicant showed his bank book. The old bal- ance of $600 had been drawn down to 36 or $7. It was stated at the bureau that the names of men from out of town were recorded after they had made appli- cation, and that they would be taken care of if the time came when all local applicants had been placed. Those applying who have property and whose need is not as great as others, will be treated in a somewhat similar manner, although it was said at the burean that their need was fully recognized. It is the belief of those in charge that where a man has shown sufficient thrift to accumulate | property, and stands in danger of los- ing the results of a life-time of hard work, he should not be turned away if it is possible to aid him after those { in vital need have been given work Some Recfuse Jobs, It is the aim of the bureau, as far as possible, to give a person the work to which that person has been ac- customed. A carpenter, mechanic, or person skilled in some other trade is not offered a job with pick and shov- el unless he expresses willingness to take such work. Some have refused to work in the sewer job. Others have tried, but, be- ing unaccustomed to the labor, have returned to the burcau and shown evi- dences of their unfamiliarity with manual labor. For them other work in sought It is admitted that a man whose hands become sore and blis- tered by pick and shovel work is not fitted for it, at least at first Frequent telephone calls are com- ing into the bureau asking for men to do small jobs. Everything (from washing windows to taking care of a man with a broken leg has been re- ported and help asked Calls have come in from nearby towns. Newington and Maple Hill have sought help here The Mungry Are Fed. The motto of the bureau, in accord- ance with instructions, is: “Allow no persons to go to bed hungr ant to this creed those in actual nced are sent to Superintendent Cowlishaw of the charities board, who sees that rations are given out. Note the sheath of feathers at the side of her smart, small hat. Leatrice Joy, Goldwyn Pictures (right), also goes in for beads. Bead- ing on the fall gown is to be very good. Leatrice, however, confines her frock’'s ornamentation to a chiffon apron, which is elaborate enough indeed. The fabric medium for the gown is duvetine.
