Attd Held Up by Meriden Police Found to Be Loaded with Typewriters, . Meriden, April 25.—A five-ton Mack truck, loaded with Underwood typewriters and adding machines and owned by the Woodland Transporta- tion company of Hartford, was stop- ped here last evening and take to the pélice headquarters upon request of Federal Prohibition Agent McAuliffa of Hartford. After the truck and the men with it were taken to police headquarters, Lieutenant William D. Thayer communicated with the fed- eral agent who told him to let the truck go. The truck was driven by Harry W. Coville and was accompanied by Rose- well B. Porter. At about 11:45 o’clock the local police received word that a Mack truck bearing Connecticut reg- istration 21—559 was headed toward Meriden. Federal Agent McAulifte sent word to the local police to stop the truck if it passed through Meri- den. Shortly after that time Patrolman Kurcon made inquiries of a south- bound truck driver, who said that he had passed a Mack truck that was “giving a hand’} to a Ford that had been stalled op the road north ot Meriden. At dbout midnight the Mack truck came along and was tak- en to police headquarters by Sergeant John Custy and Patrolman ‘Walter Krucon. The driver of the truck was good- natured -about the affair and said that there must have been a mistake somewhere. He said the load of box- | es was inspected by Federal Agent McAuliffe before the truck left Hart- | ford. This information was given to | the federal agent over the telephone, and, after the names and addresses of the men had been taken, they were allowed to continue their journey. CROWLEY BROS. INC.
