Washington, March 25.—Surprise lingered in the wake today of the un- heralded visit to Washington unat- tended, of Eugene V. Debs, imprison- ed soclalist leader, to discuss his case with Attorney Gen. Daugherty. Slip- ping into Washington early yesterday Debs had gone to the department of Justice, held a three hours conference with the attorney general and left to return to the Atlanta penitentiary be- fore his visit was announced by Mr. Daugherty to a group of dumbfound- ed newspapermen, whom the social- ist leader had successfully throughout the day. In announcing the visit of Debs, whose case he recently was directed to review by President Harding} tho attorney geéneral said he had called the socialist leader to Washington after conferring with the president. inasmuch as Debs had defended himself at his trial, Mr. Daugherty ' sald, it was decided that he should come here to answer such inquirics | as the vovernment desired to make. The attorney general refused to comment on Debs presentment of his case or to indicate what recommen- dations he might make. Peking, March 25 (By the Associ- ated Press).—Famine which holds the provinces of Honan, Shensi and Chihii in its grasp is reaping a dreadful har- vest, according to reports received at the headquarters of the internation- al relief organization here., In twen- ty-two counties of Honan the aver- age daily death rate on March 15 was 1,000. . Pneumonic plaguee recently made its appearance in 20 villages along the border between the provinces of Chihli and Shantung, 108 persons dy- ing from the malady.
