bre DEEP BREATHING IN TREATMENT FORT. B. Successful Experiments at Hm-) ford State Hospital Hartford, March 23.—Three ques- tions of importance in tuberculosis research activity are partially an- swered as a result of observation and experiment conducted over an extend- ed period in the Hartford State Tu- berculosis Hospital, of which Dr. Wil- Ham M. Stockwell, formerly health officer of New Britain, is superintend- ent. They are: 1. What is the effect of carefully planned and scientifically adapted breathing exercises upon tuberculosis patients? 2. Can experiments in sun treat- ment (heliotherapy), be regarded as permanent? 3. Are heart lesions found among tuberculosis patients? The conduct of the breathing exer- cises upon the patients has been by | Dr. Samuel Delano, assistant superin- tendent at the sanatorium, who has developed the system which he em- ployed through general practice, re- search work and sanatoria supervi- sion for more than a quarter of a century. Both general physical train- ing for the trunk and special exere cises for the thorax, and especially the effect of deep breathing have been de- veloped by Dr. Delano, and the appli- . eation of his methods to patients at the Hartford sanatorium have been attended with thoroughly beneficial effects. According to Dr. Delano’s re- port to the. commission, the following results have been secured: 1. A distinct increase of power of the chest has been noted. 2. A decided impulse has been ap- parent on the part of the individual patient to make use of the whole chest. 3. The patients have been able in every case to use the deep breathing exercises without irritation. No cough has followed and in a few weeks the coughs and expectorations of the pa- tients who have taken the treatment have shown a tendency to diminish. 4. In no case has the slightest drawback or adverse symptom ap- peared as the result of the exercises. 5. The beneficial effects have the appearance pf permanence. Dr. Delano's experiments and ob- servations have opened a field of in- vestigation into improved treatment methods for tuberculosis which has lain almost entirely undeveloped. They will be continued judiciously at the sanatorium and their progress noted by students of the disease univer- sally. Relative to the second series of in- vestigation conducted by Superintend- ent Stockwell, follow-up methods have been conducted of patients treat- ed by heliotherapy for a period of ono, two and even three years after their discharge from. the sanatorium with the disease apparently arrested, and, In every case, reports show. no relapse. This report is regarded as throwing light on a much-mooted question in tuberculosis treatment. One of the rules or observations of tuberculosis patients has been some- what disturbed by the report of cases under observation at the Hartford Sanatorium, where Dr. Stockwell has | just shown the State Tuberculosis commission cases of two patients who exhibit heart lesion. These are very rare from a medical standpoint. AMERICAN LEGION | EXPELS WAR VET Lieut. Col Anderson of 165th Infantry Ousted After Lengthy Court- Martial Proceeding. New York, March 23.—Alexander E. Anderson, former lieutenant colonel . of the 165th Infantry, was notified to- day by the New York county executiv: committee of the American Legion that he had been expelled from the veterans' organization because of his utterances at the recent “horror on the Rhine” meeting here. This meet- ing was called as a protest against the alleged use by the French of ne- gro troops in the occupied zone of Germany and later was condemned by Legionaires as “propaganda to destroy the cordial relations existing between the United States and her war allies. The committee voted unanimously for the expulsion of the former offi- cer last midnight after a trial that had lasted more than six hours. His participation in the meeting was de- clared to be prejudicial to the best in- terests of the Legion. Anderson did not attend the trial but had sent a letter claiming the committee lacked jurisdicion in that the 69th Regiment post, of which he was the former commander, ceased to exist last De- cember. Anderson’s case is sald to be the first instance In which a member of the American Legion has been tried and expelled. STILLMAN OFFERS TO RESIGN. New York, March 23.—James A. Stillman tendered his resignation yes- terday as president of the National City bank. His resignation wis laid before the board ‘of directors of that fnstitution, at least twelve members of which body were not present, and unanimously rejected. KNOW HIM? . Something must have been decidedly | confusing in the silhouette reproduc- | tion of Attorney David Dunn's profile which appeared in the Know Him | column last evening. It was our im-l pression that the nose, broken and ! misshapen in football scrimmages, would mark him without any doubt. Evidently we were wrong as only five persons submitted the correct interpre- tation at this office up to this morn- ing. They were Adolph G. Olson, Isa- dore Koplowitz, Arthur P. Middleton, Fred O'Brien and Carl Frisk. Arthur P. Middleton was first and is awarded the dollar. ! Touight there appears the silhoueite of a man who is an active worker in New Dritain, particularly wupon oc~ casions when a drive for some char- itable proposition is in progress. One has to die to beat him at his own busi- ness. He likes to go fishing, provid- ing that luring the fish from their ud- ing places does not entail too much walking and once served an apprentice- ship in a certain navy, not the U. S. Navy. i Who is he? You are entitled to guess. What is more you are urged to do so, the more guesses we get the merrier we are. The first correct in- terpretation of the profile will be award- ed a dollar. Honorable mention is re- served for others who qualify wunder our scheme for testing your powers of observation. Place your guess upon a slip ‘of paper and put your own name upon it. Bring, or send, the slip to the Herald office. We will accept nc ‘phone guesses, no person can win twice in one week and in the event of several correct guesses being received at the same time we will draw the win- ner from the list of those tieing. Gregory, U. 8. district attorney, be enjoined from prosecuting him should he be able to move the goods. The plaintiff claims he had put the liquor aside for entertainment of his friends, guests and himself in his Paducah home and that in January be applied to Mr. Hamilton for per- mission to pay the tax and remove the whiskey.
