Secretary Hughes received the con- gratulations of Mr. Colby and ex- pressed the hope that he could call upon the retiring secretary for his advice and counsel. Weeks Takes Office. Ten minutes after Mr. Hughes took office, former Senator Weeks of Massachusetts was sworn in as sec- retary of war, the oath being admin- istered by Associate Justice McReyn- olds of the supreme court. The cere- mony took place in the secretary of war's office. Those attending the ceremony were Secretary Baker, General Pershing, Major General March, Chief of Staff, and other members of the general staff and chiefs of the departmental bureans. After the oath was administered, Secretary Baker presented to the new and Mrs. Weeks the offi- cers and bureau chiefs. There were abeut 1,000 of them who passed along the line shaking hands with Mr. and Mrs. Weeks. Other cabinet members were sworn in later. Fall Makés Appointments, Former Sénator Fall of New Mexi- co, the new secretary of interior, was the third of the cabinet officers to bo sworn in during the day. Safford, of New Mexico, former secretary of the senate com- mittee on the Pacific Islands. and Porto Rico, to be the secretary’s as- sistant. Charles W.
