(called in Japanese official language the bureau of national power investi- gation). q The actual figures prove that the y annual estimates which have been |N: taken were more than a million in ex- cess of the truth. The estimate of pop- ulation for 1918, based on a compila- tion of the lacal registers, was 78, 261,856 or 1,235,346 more than the census of 1920 pgives. For Japan proper the 1918 estimates was 67,070, 936 or 1,109,796 more than the 1920 figures. The decrease for the empire is 1.6 per cent; for Japan proper it is 1.9 per cent. RETRACTION AND APOLOGY D THE BUYING PUBLIC: On various dates subsequent o December 27th, 1920, there jwspapers located in cities where the Newark Shoe Stores Co. does business, appeared in rtisements announcin fire sales based upon fires which occurred in Wil- gton, Delaware, and altimore, Maryland. The facts upon which this copy was based were not called to the attention the undersigned until Thursday, January 13th, 1921, when the matter was led to my attention by the Associated Advertising Clubs of the World. The bi%gest asset of the Newark Shoe Stores Co., is the confidence of the ying public which it has gained and held through the years, and under no cir- pstances will we knowingly permit that confidence to be destroyed or in-any ¢ct impaired. It has been our practice to deal fairly with the public, and we bpose that that practice shall continue. /While it is true that fires occurred in both our Baltimore and Wilmington ° ¢s, neither the fires nor the size of the stocks involved would warrant this ny in conducting fire sales in all of its stores, as the entire stock in these Rtores, if distributed proportionately among all of our stores, would be en- ly too insignificant to give any sale the title of a fire sale. The buying public who purchased goods at these sales received Newark ality at Newark Prices. 'Fhough we feel that perhaps the public has suffered financial loss, nevertheless, in line with our policy of never deceiving the blic or inducing them to buy on any catch phrase, we offer without restriction fund the purchase price to any of our customers who are in any way dissat- d with their purchase made at that sale. The fire sales, have of course, been discontinued and we desire again to em- ize the fact that we think more of our reputation with the buying public we do of money they leave on our counters. We welcome any suggestion that would aid us in safeguarding the public who with us. We believe in fair competition, in truthful advertising, and above all we be- '. square dealing with our public. 1 We appreciate keenly the action of the Associated Advertising Clubs in ging this matter to our attention as we will also appreciate the action of any fidual anywhere at any time bringing to our attention anything which will aid various parts of the empire of the New Britain Shoes Shoes BATTEY’S More Shoes For New Britain BOUGHT BY ILL BATTE) The Old Reliable Wholesale House C.
