The men were trapped three miles back in the mine when fire broke out yesterday and cut off their { escape from the entrance. After all other attempts at rescue | had failed, a tunnel was dug around the burning entry and a start made for the miners. The rescue party aft- er forging into the mine for a good distance, however, were forced to come out because of the denseness of the smoke and gas. Later this morn- ing another rescue party was organ- ized and armed with gas masks pro- pose to enter the mine again. There was little hope of finding the miners alive. Those entombed in the mine are three white men and 13 negroes. One other negro in the mine was work- ing close to the entrance and dis- covered the fire soon enough to make his escape. He spread the warning and mine rescue teams from nearby coal mining cities were called for on istance. The rescue teams worked firelessly all night in the meagre hope that the men would still be alive when reached.
