At the meeting of the Plainville branch of the Red Cross held in the town hall last night, officers were elected for the coming year. They fol- low: Chairman, John Lamb; vice- president, Harry A. Castle; secretary Mrs. Charles H. Curtiss; treasurer, Miss Sadie l. Wheeler and executive secreta William Cafferty. Mr. Caf- ferty will succeed Rev. John Fay as executive secretary while Mr. Castle fills the vacancy left by Rev, E. C. Gillette vice president. Plans were also brought for a membership drive. The cam- paign will be conducted between smber 11 andNovember 20. Booths will be erected at the post office, the Plainville Trust company and Bying- ton’s drug store. The Red Cross has been doing some excellent work in the town and larger membership is that th may carry on the good work. The Baby Welfare con- ferences recently started by the or- ganization have met with good favor and are always well attended. Armistice Day Notes The Brock-Barnes post held a meet- ing at the headquarters last night and completed plans for its entertain- ment and dance to be held Thursday night. Ralph Newell, wha has charge of the entertainment, has secured some good numbers for the program. Miss Malvi Calor and Miss Violet Forster will render vocal selections.. A quarteite has also been securel for the program_ Al Malmgren af New Britain will entertain with chalk sketches. It is also probable that Major Green of Hartford will give a short talk. Major Green was the first commandcr of the local post and is known to all the members. The enter- tainment will begin at 8 o’'clock. Dancing will follow. Sullivan’s orches- tra will furnish musiec. To Have Picture Machine. At a meeting of the school board and the teachers of geography at the Plainville Grammar school held a short time ago, an exhibition of a moving picture machine was given them. - The machine was exhibited | by a publishing company. It takes all makes of standard films and can be sqt up and used where there is a direct current with which to oper- it. The machine is also approved | insurance companies and will in way endanger the school, as it ow burning films. The children are now soliciting for subscribers to a maga- zine in order to obtain the machine. A total of 490 subscribers are need- ed and half of this number will be for obtaining the machine. The support of the par- ents is urged as the apparatus will aid considerably in educating the children along geography problems. With a machine of this kind in the school, government has offered to supply them with films on educa- tional subjects without cost. Leograndi’s Case Heard. Through the State Humane society at Hartford, the case of G. Leo- grandi of South Washington street has been heard. The town ufllci:rlsl have taken action on the matter re- garding the allezed negligence of the children and the humane society was brought in as a last resort. Leograndi has 10 children, six of whom are his and four belong to his second wife. Leograndi is a hard worker, according to the reports. Family troubles are said to be the cause of negligence on the part of I.eograndi and his wife. The humane 'ty ordered Leograndi to pay a sum of $25 a week towards the chil- dren and furnish fuel besides.
