The score was a tie at 3 each when the Dodgers went to bat in the ninth inning Bernie Nels, who had been having trouble all the afternoon in locating Wilbur Cooper's slants, final- ly landed on the spheroid and drove it to left center for a double. Then the board of strategy decided on a bit of finesse. Zack Wheat, next at bat, was instructed to make a fake attempt at a bunt In order to draw McKechnie | away from third base, whereupon Neis was to make a dash for third. It this were successful, Neis would easily score on a sacrifice fly by Wheat. Zack made the fake attempt at a bunt, pur- posely missing the ball by inches, but the merits of the strategic play or was coldly indifferent. In any event, he was not drawn away frem third to any appreciable extent. Neis carried out his assignment and made a wild rush for third, and Wal- | ter Schmidt, the alert backstop of the Pirates, hurled the ball to third. He had plenty of time in which to get Nels, but in his eagerness he threw the ball low and wide. McKechnio ! Mr. McKechnie either failed to see! was compelled to reach far to get his hand on the ball, and he could not hold it, the leather shooting thirty {eet away on foul ground. Before it could be retrieved Neis was pattering over the home plate with the winning run. New Haven, Sept 20.—The St Louis Nationals defeated the New Haven club, pennant winners of the Eastern league, in an exhibition game here yesterday, 4 to 0. Rogers Horns- by, teading batter of the National league, failed to hit safely in four times at bat.
