DELE = BANQUET IN ROME ’Connectlcut Man Presided at| Dipner to Papal Oficial Rome, Aug. 30.—Monsignor Cer- rutti, Papal under-secretary of state and former representative of the Vatican in Washington at a banquet given in his honor tonight by the 500 Ameriean Knights of Celumbus now here, said he longed to return to the United States jhe worthiest country in which to Iike, ‘“althought it has gone dry.” The affair was the larg- est American gathering that has ovc- curred in Rome. Monsignor Cerrutti had Supreme Knight James A. Flaherty of Phil- adelphia on his right and Edward L. general commissioner for Europe of the Knights of Columbus on his left. William J. Mulligan of Thompsenville, Conn., and John F. O’'Neill of Jersey City, members of the board of directors of the Knights of Columbus had places of honor. Monsignor Cerrutti ®as the Jirst speaker and received a great owation when he hegan: *“My dear brother Knights.” He said the Pope had given his highest approval of the work of the Knights and he could not add more. “Your visit to Rome has been a ray of sunshine in the Vatican™ Mon- signor Cerrutti said. “I never saw the Pope more satisfied than after veur visit which he said was one of the greatest consolations for him. Rome now is your heme. You heard the Pope express the wish that the Knights establish themselves here. “{ long to return to America where I have spent the happiest years of my life. I lpng te salute again the Statye of Liberty and the country of true liberty, the worthiest in which to live, glthough it has gone dry.” Monsignor Cerrutti ended by re- gretting the absence of Mensignor O’Herne, rector of the American col- lege in Rome, who is 1. Mensignor Cerrutti’s address was continually interrupted by applause especially when he handed the insisnia of St. Gregory the Great to Supreme Knight Flaherty. Mr. Flaherty said he aecepted the degoration as recegnition of the great work done by the Knfghts of Columbus. At this point the lights went out, owing te the Roman electricians join- ing the strike called in other cities Candles were bramght in and Mr. Flaherty continued his speech.
