Roads must place an embargo against consignces failing to unload open top cars within 24 hours after deMvery. No opposition was voiced to a res- olution as recommended last evening to a special city nieeting by Judge B. F. Gaffney of the board of finance and taxation calling for a recommendation to the council that a special tax levy of 2% mills on next year's grand list be approved. The purpose of the ac- tion is to secure '$140,300, of which s 300 is for teachers’ salaries, $60,- 000 for the street department and $5,000 for repairs at the municipal slaughter house. About 50 attended the session, including the membership of the finance and taxation board, public works board and several coun- cil committees that were to meet later in the evening. A drive for cid newspapers will soon be started by the New Britain German Relief society in an effort to secure money to be sent to the hun- gry thousands in Germany and Aus- tria. The old papers are worth con- siderable money when sold and it is thought this method is the best Known to secure money.
