With the th ballot Palmer strength took another drop. Amid jubilation by McAdoo supporters, Chairman Robhinson fought for order and led forn Iepresentative Carlin of Virginia, Palmer’s manager, up to the speaker’s stand. The crowd hushed. =it recognizeda Carlin and knew that his appearance forecast only one thing: the of the Palmer delegates and a br in the deadlock. Men halted where they stood in the aisles to listen. Corri- dors poured back hundreds of lounz- ers to the tioor to pack the doorways and jam the entrances to the gal- leries. An electric feeling of ex- pectancy was in the air. Carlin briefly stated that Attorney General Palmer was no longer will- ing to delay a nomination and an- thorized the complete and uncondi- tional release of his delegates. A shout went up only to be quickly stilled, while Chairman Robinson an- nounced a 20-minute recess so that delegafions might be polled for new alignments and the change in the sit- uation be conmsidered before another vote was taken.
