DUMB DAN WRITES. Morgan Says Carpentier-Levinsky Battle Will Take Place in Fall. Sporting Editor, Dear Sir: Battling Tevinsk: light heavyweight champion, and Georges Carpentier, the “wonder man * will bex either in the month of October or November for the light heavy. weight championship of the world, weight 175 pounds ringside. Mr. Descamnps, representing Carpentier, has signed a contract extending the date of contest from July 26 to a date not later than November, and I have done ‘the samec for Levinsky. It i1s possible that the contest may take place in Octpber. But there is no doubt about the contest taking place, and it will show the public whether or not the Frenchman is a fit opponent for the heavyweight champion. It would not do the boxing game any good for the boxing fans to pay big prices for seate to see a ! Dempsey-Carpentier bout and the contest to finish in a round or two. If Carpentier can whip Levinsky he will then have good grounds for a bout with the champion, for the Battler has _easily whipped Billie Miskie, Bill Brennan. Bartley Madden, Charlie Weinert and all the rest of the supposed heavyweight contenders, with the exception of Fred Fulton. Levinsky first with Carpentier, and if the Frenchman can whip the American cham- pion, then throw him into the Fing with | Dempsey and. it will be a great battle. . Fourteen Massachusetts Clergymen Head' Petition to Prevent Popular Sports—Othes’ Individuals and Organizations Protest. Boston, June 21.—A petition bearing the signatures of 14 clergymen as the first move® to prevent the new Massachusetts boxing law from going into effect September 4 under the amendment to the Constitution has been flled with the secretary of state. If the petitioners can file an additional 15,000 signatures from four counties before that time the operation of the law will be held up, under the initiative and referendum amendment to the Constitution., and the question will have to be submitted to the voters at the next state election. In view of the fact that the Lord’s Day league an& a number of churches are behind the move- ment, it is regarded as likely that the requisite number of signatures will be ob- tained. The law provides for a boxing com= mission. appointed by the government, and allows 10-round professional bouts. PIONEERS WIN Locals Turn Back Hillitop A. C. With 5-to-1 Defeat—Noonan Again Dons the Backstop Spangles for Local Nine. A big crowd turned out at the Ellis streets grounds yesterday afternoon to see the Hilltop A. C. of New Haven take a S-to-1 beating from the Pfoneers and also to cheer Mickey” Noonan upon his return to the local club. “Mickey” displayed all of his old form behind the bat, and Palmer, the husky twirler, seemed to be at his best with the reliable backstopping accorded him. He turned back 11 of the visitors through the s. o. route. Johnson, the Maine eollegian, was back in the game with the locals, play- ing shortstop. He 4id well. Begley, a second base, turned in a fine afternoon's work. both in the fleld and at bat, and Eddie Goeb had his batting eye with him, setting three safe clouts during the game.
