Mr. Glover was also called upon and in a few well chosen words thanked the factory foremen for the co-operation they have always given him and assured Mr. Spear that if in the future he receives the hearty sup- port of the foremen that had been his during his long term of service, Mr. Spear’s success in his new posi- tion was assured. Later Mr. Glover made allusion to the starting of the screw business in New Britain and explained how that one of the pio- neer manufacturers, hearing that the Russell & Erwin company was about to buy out a factory in Wheatogue, “hitched up his team” in the morn- ing, drove over to that factory and purchased it then, before the others That was the beginning of or; arrived. the business here. Play Up to the Game. The principal spcaker of the even- ing was Dr. Willard Scott of Brook- line, Mass., an after dinner speaker of national repute. Dr. Scott is an eloquent talker; a man with a real message for mdh, but who has humor so embodied -in himself that it radi- ates from him and his talk takes on the asject of a humorous mono- logue until it is later analyzed when it is found that he has really driven home a pertinent message. Dr. Scott's theme was “Play Up to the Game,” and he put it across with the well known “punch.”” He com- pared the old times with the present times, compared. various modes of living and various methods of doing one's life work and declared that the only man worth while is the man who plays up to the game; the man who puts today's failures behind bhim and starts off tomorrow afresh: the man who plays the game of life fair- ly and squarely but plays it for all it is worth; the man who is not sat- isfled with doing just what is ex- pected of him, but does a little more; the man who is not satisfied to go in the beaten paths, but who “takes a chance” and plays for big stakes. In conclusion, Dr. Scott touched upon the relation of capital and labor as they are today and compared them with the conditions of years ago. The spirit of comradery is growing more and more evident and every day the world is growing more beautiful a place in which to live, he said. Guests of the Evening. Among the guests of the evening were several of the new executive staff of the Screw corporation, Presi- dent A. G. Kimball of Landers, Frary & Clark, Isaac D. Russell of the Am- erican Hardware corporation and Jesse F. Atwater, traffic manager of that concern. Another guest was Horace K. Jones of Hartford, who has been with the Corbin Screw _corporation for 45 years. Today Mr. Jones is near the lively an interest in the concern as| the younger men. He is at the fac- tory every day and proudly .boasts that during past 456 years he has been back and forth between Hartford and New 0 in Kensington, laying them out to use in obtaining water power for an old factory in that place.
