T GOOD WAY W DR D, MONDAY, MARCH 19 20. 1, CAN'DRINK ONLY FOR RELIGION Collector Walsh Gets Ruling on Wine Which Jews May Use and How w it Hartford, Maren 1. nue Collecior James J. Walsh recent- Iy asked the department in Washing- ton for a ruling as to the quantity of wine that may be used by Jewish neople for religious ceremonies and how the wine may be sccured. The collector received today ruling on the subject. Jewish families after gaining the approval of the rabbi of their respec- tive congregations, who in_ turn wiil secure permits from the office of the prohibition enforcement director, may secure a maximum of 15 gallons of wine a year. Permission is granted the rabbi in each ¢ to make the wine himself and it is also provided that not more than the maximum amount may be made in the home for the purposes outlined. It is explained in connecti the ruling that “in view of the fact that for many centuries it has been he custom of Jewish families to make wine in their homes in connec tion with Sabbath observance, Pass over and other solemn feasts, permi sion for the continuance of the custom is recognized.” The wine may he drunk during the established religious ceremonies only.
