Players © Will Form New Orchestra of Their Own Boston, Feb. 27.—Unless the Boston Symphony Orchestra players are recognized as a union by the trustees they will form an archestra themselves under union affiliation. according to a statement made by a committee of the players today. Ninety per cent. of the members have joined the union and financial back- ing for the proposed new orchestra has been offered, it is said. Unionization “is the only thing that will hold the organization together,” the statement declares. “The play- ers have not received a sufficient salary, and being- non-union men could get little outside work. As a result men have left the orchestra year after year to join the union, and the constant change in membership! has been a damper to proper team work.” Frederic Fradkin, concert master of the orchestra, joined the union ves- terday and it is claimed that many of the plavers who bave not joined have announced their intention of doing so. The trustees have recently rejected a request for an increase of $1,000 a yvear for each player, but have ex- pressed a willingness to have a fall season of popular concerts to add to the players’ receipts. Gilbert Company commenced business in 1910, manufacturing educational toys. In its first year the total sales were $37,000. Last year it had become the greatest toy manufac- turing business in America, if not in the world, with sales of over $1,700,000 in 1919. " One of its first products was Erector, a steel construction toy. Then wireless and electrical outfits, chemistry sets, telephone and telegraph outfits, toy motors, aeroplanes,. etc., were added to the Gilbert line. A small electric fan—the “Polar Cub”—is also manufactured and the com- pany has orders on its books now for over $500,000 of these fans. The profit from the man- ufacture of this article alone, it is expected, will more than pay the dividend and sinking fund requirement on the issue of preferred stock, without taking into account the very profitable toy business. These Gilbert toys retail at prices ranging from $2 to $75 and are bought by people all over the world, wio consider the price not a payment for a toy but a payment for the education of their children.
