THAN DOUBLE IN SIX YEARS - THAT’S WHY PRICE OF RENTS IS CLIMBING SKYWARD Mr., Rentpayer ! Here’s the story of why your rents have been going up in the past few years. _VVhen yvou seek information as to why the landlord has called around and informed you . that your rent would have to be increased again, go to the mayor and some of his unbusiness commissioners, who have been spending the city’s money so lavishly and with so little to show for it. Or you may glance over the records. They speak for themselves. ) They tell the story of how in the six years of Mayor Quigley’s administration the appropriations jumped from $848,236.75, spent in 1914 to $1,892,922.60, the amount recommended for expenditure this year by ihe Board of Finance and Taxation. That speaks for itself. In six years the city’s expenses have more than doubled. Not another city in Connecticut has increased its expenses in any such proportion. This table shows how the expenses have grown since Mayor Quigley was elected to office: Tax Due List of Grand Appropriations Tax Rate July October List § 1st Dist. 2nd Dist. = Total 1914 1913 $42,969,988 $ 848,236.75 01125 0055 01675 1915 1914 44,470,867 938,803.75 012 00575 01775 1916 1915 45,589,391 1,072,318.25 0156 004 0196 1917 1916 48,079,158 1,154,813.75 016 004 020 1918 1917 50,030,127 1,212,580.38 0165 .004 0205 1919 1918 52,021,876 1,337,490.49 016 005 021 1920 . 1919 58,019,503 #1,892,922.60 026 004 - *.030 *As recommended by thé¢ Board of Finance and Taxation. Mr. Voter ! That’s the proposition facing you today. A 30 mill tax rate is not needed. If gives that a!varicious landlord another chance to.hop rents. We don’t want that. Instead let us cut down the appropriations to figures within reason. Let us make the improvements we can afford this year and no other. The big appropriations asked for will be wasted. Prices are too high and labor too scarce to warrant attempting changes or improvements that cannot be secured except at exhorbitant cost, which must eventually come out of the .pockets .of every one of us, whether we pay taxes or board. Here’s the solution of the problem. Get to the city meeting in the Grammar school hall Friday night and vote for a tax rate that is within reason and one that will bring in sufficient revenue to cover sensible expenses without robbing yourself of the hard earned money you need for yourseif and your family. -~ i EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE TAXPAYERS' ASSOCIATION
