A- MESSAGE TO-OUR-PEOPLE Which way are you going to travel this year? Are you headed for the highway of Progress, or the Valley Road of Retrogression? There will be no standing still, because the New Year brings Opportunity and Responsibility to every American citizen. We must either “Carry On” or Dodge—Move Up or Down. Qur election to self governorship depends upon the right plank in our platform. The average American has recently been disciplined in the school of self. Out of the dark- ness and perplexity of war came the firmer counsels and clearer perceptions of duty. Our people arrived at a more sober realization of the part they were called upon to play. Patriotism taught them the quintessence of THRIFT. Are you going to forget—in a measure—our lesson? We saved for the Nation’s Victory—are we going to keep it up for our own financial independence? The average individual citizen is making more money than he ever did before and there will be influences around him to invite extravagance. The pottage of pleasure tempts us to sell the heritage of future fortune—the Siren Song of Spending draws us with its appar- ent harmony; the Delilah of Debt lays wait around the corner to ensnare us; the Mirage of Luxury attempts to deceive—and “keeping up appearances” is a will-o-the-wisp to draw us further unto the wood. : The circumstances of the times should do much to quicken our national consciousness and deepen and confirm our desire and determination to practice Thrift.
