St. Louis, Dec. 31.—Righty per cent of the country’'s sweet potato crops are destroyed annually by fungus dis- cases, according to delegates today at the convention of the American as- sociation for advancement of science in session here. The national research council’ is trying to eradicate these disecases. Dr. W. J. Humphr of the gov- ernment weather bureau, Washington, D. C, in an address before the meteorological section asserted that air pushed north blows east, because of the deflective effect of the earth’s rotation and that rain dries the at- mosphcere, because it removes the water from it. Heating free atmosphere cools it, and cooling warms it, he asserted. | "his he explained by saying warmed air will rise and cool, and cooled air will: fall and become warm by com- pression. The excess profitd tax was de- | nounced as “unjust, unsound and dan- i gerous” in an address last night by | Morris Frey, a New York banker. He advocated that it be substituted by a gross sale tax. He asserted the excess profits tax partly was responsible for the high cost of living declaring many business | men increased the prices of their products so as to reimburse them- | selves in part for that which they paid the government. He declared a tax of one per cent on sales would bring the government $5,000,000,000 annually. 1919, Thouands of eyes search the Classified Columns Daily. Let them see your propositions.
