TEL. 612 - New Britain Typewriter Exchange, 72 West Main Street REFUSE HOME RULE Caustic Gomment in Reply to Premiers Plan Dublin, Dec. 28.—In upon the speech made by Premier Lloyd George ‘in the house of com- mons y day during which he out- commenting | lined provisions of the proposed Irish home rule bill, the Freemen’s Journal says Lloyd George “in the presence of the American ambassador but in the absence of every representative of the majority of the Irish people explained to the house his panacea for the ills of Ireland.” “Even the few Irish nationalist members who have survived the prime minister’s past treacheries and“ be- trayals, absented - themselves,” the newspaper continues. ‘“Phey probably had a forecast that their gesture of contempt would be warmly -approved by the whale Irish nation and race. As a matter of fact they were merely obeying the command of their dead leader, given when he and they ith- drew from the house on ' the ' first declaration of the. premier's intention to permanently partition their coun- try.” The Irish Times say : reascns, “some good, some bad, sonte wise and some mad,” three-quarters of the Irish people will reject the bill. “Its principle is hateful alike to the unionists and nationalists,” the news- paper says. “They know national idcals and the ancestral spirit of = commion patriotism cannot persist in a divided country. They know the fan: tastic homeogenity which the govern- ment proposes for Ulster unionisis would be an excresence on the map of Ireland and would be ruinous to the 's.that for many inces. We yearn for peace but in the Lloyd George offer we see not peace, but the sword.” TLondon, Dec ide from one or two irreconciliable anti-home rule journals London papers this morning give on the whole a favorable recep- tion to the government's new scheme for Irish self-government. None, however, expresses geunine expecta- tion of the success of the plan. ‘While it is recognized that such a bill as Premier Llayd George outlined vesterday—the fourth home rule measure to be presented to parliament, will be absolutely rejected by a large section of the Irish people and re- garded with suspicion and distrust by others, it is contended it deserves to be fairly considered and tried. BE CAREFUL OF FIRES. During the holid season, there are many opportunities for bad fires, through the character of articles used in the holiday festivities, such as tin- sel and the like. It is the wish of the fire authorities that every pre- caution be taken to prevent fires. New Britain has been fortunate in the past loss at the ;holiday time, through any cause that might be attributed to neglect of at- tention.
