J., Dec. 15.—The body of James Blake, five s old, son or Mr, and Mrs. Jame Blake, of this city and Philadelphia, was washed up by the sea on the beach at Ventnor, a cottage city adjoining this resort, about ten o'clock yester- day mornireg. The police say that the boy’s moth- er \\')‘il(‘ in a fit of mental aberration superinduced by a narcotic threw the boy from a pier into the wav et- ing from an irresistible impulse. The i child was virtually a mute. Neverthe- less he was very popular with thosc who knew him and was affectionately known as “Buddy.” The policé say Mrs. Blake felt that this fact was the cause of her hus- band's separation from her. Mr. Blake has been living at her moth- er’s home. His wife and son board- ed nearby. vesterday afternodbn Mrs. Blake was called upon at the Atlantic City hospital by William W. Sprague, chief of Ventnor police, who, standing at her bedside, read a warrant charg- ing her with having caused the death | of her child. The mother showed scarcely any emotion and clung to her original story that two negroes robbed her and kidnapped little James in Cambridge place, in Ventnor, on Friday night. Abandon Kidnap Theory. : through the northerly side of this island. The hody of little James was found on tho beach several blocks helow the municipal pier, on the southerly side of Ventnor. A\ physician who had attended My Blake on Friduy night when she col- lapsed in the vestibule of the home of Benjamin Tox, in Ventnor, said that she had been using a narcotic When guestioned by Chief Sprague Jate Saturday night Mrs. Blake denied having been on the pier in Ventnor. She had gone to Ventnor in a jitney bus on Friday evening, she said, Lit- tle James was with her. They got on a trolley car in lower Ventnor and went east. She intended to alight at Portland avenue, Mrs. Blake told the police, but went a block past her des- tination, leaving the car ai Cambridge avenue, which also is in Ventnor. While they were walking south in this street two negroes, one wearing an army service cap, suddenly appeared from behind a hox hedge and directed Mrs. Blake to halt, she said. She could not recall the appearance of the negroes. One, she said, the man with the service cap, was short and it was he who took her handbag from her. While she was struggling with him the other ran off with little James. According to a statement made to Detective Nusbaum, Mrs. Blake is al- leged to have said at some undefined time that had little James been placed in an institution when he was a year old she and her husband might not be separated. Cause For Sepavration. According to this person Mrs, Blake folt that her child’s affliction in large the cause of her hus- tion from her.
