Rugs of all [5 HEAVILY FINEI] Arthur Brown of Hartford As sessed $60 and Costs One of the most interesting sessions held in the police court in some time | took place this morning when Arthur Brown of 96 Homestead street, Hart- ford, was fined $60 and costs.by Judge James T. Meskill on the charge of reckless driving. Accident Friday Night Brown was charged with having struck a Ford touring car on the Hart- ford road, near Stanley quarter, last Friday night. The collision of the Brown car, which was a racing model, threw the Ford into a deep sutter, and it is said that the Ford turned turtle several times. The Ford was being driven by Carl A. Morling of 116 Bowen street, Hartford, and he was being assisted by Louis Frederickson also of that city. The occupants of the Ford testified that the Marion racing car was being operated by Brown, came down the road in the same direction as the Ford was going, and when trying to pass the smaller car struck it in the re: Blames Ford Driver. Following the accident Brown is said to have stated that he was trav- & an hour. Brown denied that he made a ment to this t, while on th this morning. He did, however. that the Ford was traveling of about 15 miles per hour and hi machine was being operated not ove 25 miles per hour. His account of the accident was that he, together with Elmer Goubelett of 75 Sterling street, West Hartford, had been in New Britain on ghe night of September 12, and on returning to Hartford shortly after midnight, north of Tbelle’s gor- | ner, they came upon a Ford car which was being driven towards Hartford. Brown, upon seeing the car, attempt- ed to pass it, and in doing so his car | slid off the pavement into soft dirt. He was forced to pull out or else his car would have slipped down a steep embankment. When getting on the highway again he erted that he was again forced towards the bank as the Ford shot to the left side of the road and did not give him a chance to pass. In his second attempt ta get back onto the pavement he struck the rear end of the Ford, but according to his testimony he did not throw the small touring car off the highway. Several of the occupants of the Ford made appearance this morning, showing bruises about the face and arms, which they had sustained in the accldent. They testified that Brown came speeding down the highway and his car could be seen swaying reck- lessly down the street until it struck the Ford. Morling, who was operat- ing the Ford, had only registered his car the morning previous to the ac- cident and had as vet not received his license. Asks for Jail Sentence. Prosecutor George Klett in summing up the case, explained to the court that the evidence presented indicated that Brown was traveling at an exces- sive rate of speed and the accident might have been avoided if Brown had trailed the Fard. The prosecutor in conclusion added that a jail sentence for at least several days would teach Brown as well as other speed law vio- lators, a lesson which they would not easily forget. Attorney Nathan Freedman of Hart- fard appeared for the accused. In his plea he stated that he was very much surprised at the assertions made by Prosecutor Klett and owing to Brown's previous good record a jail sentence should not be given. He also asserted l that the evidence presented by § Brown's witness as well as the witnesses on the side of the state, the operator of the Ford should be held as much responsible for the mishap as Brown. Following the deeision of the court Attorney Freedman appealed the case ta the next term of the superior court. Bonds were fixed at $200. Other Cases.
