Holmquist of thé chamber of commerce gardens committee writes the following about this season’s pests: “Several inquiries have been ceived recently regarding the squash borer and the striped cucumber bettle. The squash borer usually lays its eggs the latter part of June and not being particular where they are laid, may be found on most any part of either squash or pumpkin vines. Upon hatching the lavae bores “into the base of the stem and starts feeding, eventually causing the vines to wilt and die. “Keep a close watch of your vines during July and August. One of the surest signs of this pest is sawdust or deposits of excrement found near the base. Take a knife and slit the stem of the vine lengthways until the borer is found, then kill him. Both are yellow with three black lines on their back, but the cucumber beetle is somewhat smaller and a brighter yellow with a black head. The lavae grubs are small white insects that eat the ten- der roots of the vines on which the adults are seen and in addition the feeding of the adults is instrumental in spreading a bacterial wilt that of- ten suddenly kills the vines. Young vines can be protected by nailing four boards together in form of a square and covering the top with wire net- ting. Place this over the hills. It is difficult to poison the beetles, Dbe- cause they will hunt out parts of the stems or leaves, or later the in- side of the flowers, where the sur- face is not coated With a spray ma- terial. Samuel Bamforth on a charge of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of liquor. The accused was driving down Bast Main street last night at about 6:55 and while passing Landers’ Co-opera- tive store, skidded and his machine crashed into a Buick touring car owned by Miss Mabel Bollerer and which was standing near the curbing The police were notified of the acei- dent and an officer was detailed by Lieutenant Bamforth to make an in- vestigation. In the meantime, Con- tois was taken to police headquarters by James Farrell and John O’Dell to straighten matters out. The officer {in charge questioned the accused and as a result placed him under arrest on the charges stated. At that time, according to the officer, Contois ad- mitted having several glasses of Bass ale. Farrell and O’Dell, on the witness stand, said that the accident was caused by wet pavements. They would not say that the accused was drunk | but that he was in a highly nervous | state. The accused said that he had skidded in an attempt to stop his car but was by no means under the influence of liquor. : Judge John H. Kirkham was the bench and imposed the minimum fine of 350 and costs. Emil Heinzman, the 14 year old boy who has been missing from home | for the past few days was arrested vesterday afternoon and will be sent to the School for Boys.' Abantelo Penachio was with the Heinzman boy, but because of his past record and his promise to behave himself he cutor.
