Dr. Joseph Goldberger of the New York public health service is an au- i thority for the statcment that the dis- ! ease known as rickets is caused by substitution of too large a percentage child’s diet, instead of milk. Milk con- tains all constituents of complete nu- trition and in proper proportion. It is, thercfore, one of the chief articles of diet prescribed in the treatment of pellagra and rickets in the United States. There are now 125,000 cases of pellagra in the country. Rickets is a disease of early childhood, charac- terized by defectiye nutrition of the entire body and alterations in the | growing bone. Tests completed at the Cennecticut Agricultural station at New Haven in- dicate that sore eves of children are | often the result of too littla milk in their diet, Butter fat is the ingredi- ent of milk which shauld be consumed { by children in order to avoid un- necessary eye troubles. Experiments at the agricultural station have that, if a young rat is fed on a ration adequate in all respects except that the fat is furnished by lard or vege- ble oils in place of butter fat, it will grow normally far about 80 days, then suddenly it will decline in weight and soon die. Such animals are found frequently to be suffering from in- fected eyes and in may cases large developed on the eyeball. A smal] :-aount of Datker fat added to the dict causes an immediate recov- ery of health, gain prompt restoration of the eyes to their normal condition. This marvelous effect is due to the presence in the butter fat of some substance as yet undiscovered, which for the time being is called the fat- soluble vitamine. The presence or absence of this substance in any food- stuff can he detected, y the statian experts, only by feeding young ani- mals. Milk alone contains this much needed butter fat in large quantities. With the rapld increase of malnu- trition in the United States it seems wise to adopt preventive measures. GOURT STREET EXTENSION Many Favor But Some Are Opposed 1o Proposed Improvements of Central Thoroughfare Into High Street. A hearing on the proposed exten- sion of Court street to South High street was held last evening at the meeting of the board of public works. Chairman E. N. Humphrey of it hoard said that he considered the ex- tension a benefit and the cost should be pald through general taxation. D. McMillan also spoke in favor of the extension. D, K. Pe spresen- tative of the People's Evangelical church, said that despite the fact that the church would not benefit hy the improvements, the work should be paid for by general taxation. A representative of the Evangelical Church of Reformatian opposed the extension, and claimed it would ruin the church property. Others who op- posed the extension were Roger W. an, John Peterson, Mrs. wce M. Coholan, William Middlemass, the Misses Eastman and Rev. Lyman S Johnson. Dr. Henry T.
