As the day for his retirement grows nearer city officials are realiz- ing the loss to the city nation in the resig- Bernadotte Loomis as tax During his short of term of Loomis has wrought many changes in affairs in the office. The strange part of it is that he takes no credit for this work but gives credit to his assistant. One of the first things learned, by a little inves- tigation of figures, is that Mr. Loomis has cleared up an enormous amount of back taxes. When he entered the office there were taxes due the oity back as far as 1890. These taxes were also numerous. During Mr. Loomis’ has cleared up eight years of these back taxes and the date of back In connection with the taxes paid and salaries paid city officials, it is interesting to learn that the money which Mr. Loomis collect- ed for interest alone during the past year was enough to pay the salaries of the town clerk and his clerks, the ax collector and his clerks, and the assessor and clerk. The amount of money collected on interest was $10,- i19.11. In comparing the salary of the tax collector of this city with | other cities the comparison shows all cities beyond this one. If Mr. Loomis were to be paid at the rate of one- half of one per cent. on his collections for the year he would be able to pay himself a salary of $3,000, his first as- sistant $1,200, and his second assist- ant, §1,000. Already, for the present vear, which does not end until April, over $1,000,000 has been collected. The office of the and ity | clerk is also one of interest. It is one | of the few city clerk’s offices where everything can be found filed up to | the minute. The office is just about self supporting at the present time. The work of the office has grown | steadily for the past few years yet the number of clerks in the office re- mains the same. The clercal ex- the town {edy, which enriches penses have increased but little. At the present time and for some time past the city had done without its | deputy city clerk who is with the col- ors in France. During his absence the work Is being carried on by the other clerks in the office and their work is recognized as highly efficient. Tt is probable that the deputy's place will be given him when he returns from France. A. L. Thompson has seen many changes since he has been city clerk and during that time work of the office has increased stead- | ily with the rapid growth of the city.
