Miss Maude Kerin, j NEW BRITAIN | HNOW IMPORTANG OF WOMAN'S WORK Industries of State Asked to Co- operate lor Higher Standards Hartford, 21.—Through Connecticut State Council of Defense, Deg, the the federal Department of Labor has called upon the industries of the state | fo co-operate with state and federal agencies in maintaining standards re- lating to women’s work and its con- ditions. These standards have been adopted by the War Labor Policies board, and the Department of Labor has aslked the co-operation of indus- tries all over the country. The rc quest- was made in recognition of the { national importance of women's work and its conditions. It is pointed out by the Department of Labor that mo woman should employed or permittted to work more than eight hours in one day, or 48 hours in any one week. The time when the work of women employ should begin and end and allowed for meals should be posted in a conspicuous place in each work- room, and a record should be kept of the overtime of each woman worker. Every woman worker, says the La- bor department, should have one day of rest in every seven, and at least three-quarters of an hour for meal No woman should be employed be- tween the hours of 10 p. m. and 6 j@. m. Women doing the same work as men should receive the same wages with such proportionate increases as the men are receiving in the same in- dustry. Wages should be established upon the basig of occupation and not on the basis of and should cover the cost of living of the dependents and not merely that of the individual, Women should not be employed in occupations involving the use of poison, which are proved to be more be as certain processes in the lead indus- try. No work should be given out in rooms used for living or sleeping pur- inoses, or in rooms directly connected with living or sleeping rooms in any dwelling or tenement. The Labor department points out that the responsibility should not rest upon the management of an industry ively the condition which should exist. | The genuine co-operation essential to production can be secured only if defi- nite channels of communication he- tween employers and group of their workers are established. The need of creating methods of joint negotiation between emplovers and group of em- | ploves is especlally great in the light the time ' injurious to women than to men, such | alone to determine wisely and effect- | i Jid, HERALD, SATURDAY, Dii"EMBER South Ghurch Wishes You a Very Merrie Sunday, December ) MUSIC FOR MORNING WORSHIP—10:45 Organ Prelude—CHRISTMAS IV SICILY Yon Carol—0O COME YE CHILDREN .
