After two days of battle, the Brit- ish reinforcements came up. The British Canadians and French ig.all numbered about six divisions, 25,000 in each divisio The Germans had about 60 divisions of the same num- ber. On April a German officer who could speak very good English was captured. He asked where the Canadian reserves were. The Can- adians had none. After five days and nights of battle the Canadians wera put in reserve. They stayed about one mile from the lines for fourteen s under heavy shellfire, then were removed further back for well- rest. cloud ex CHAMBERLAIN MAY BE TRANSFERRED | As Result of Injuries, FLocal War Hero Expects to Enter Army Intelligence Dept. Although it had been expected for some time past that Lieutenant Rod- man Chamberlain of this city, who was attached to Company E, 102d United States infantry, serving in France with the American Expedi- tionary forces, might come back to the States as military mstructor, word been received here that he will not arrive as previously planned, ow- to the fact that he pects momentarily to be transferred. As a result of a fall several weeks ago, when Lieutenant Chamberlain, while on duty, stumbled over a cam- ouflaged trench, falling in it, he may be incapacitated from further ive military service for the remainder of the war. Just what occasioned the fall is not known at present, but Lieu- tenant Chamberlain’s fall caused the straining of the ligaments of his leg | which necessitated an operation. The operation was performed at a base hospital and Lieutenant Chamberlain still confined to that institution “somewhere in France.” He is slowly convalescing however, and instead of being discharged from duty because of his affliction, he may receive a transfer from his present post to the intelligence division of the army, in which department he would serve for the duration of the war, Lieuten- ant Chamberlain distinguished him- elf while in the service and has been cited for the distinguished service cross. Lieutenant Chamberlain is a brother of State Treasurer Frederick S. Chamberlain of this eiy. His wife, Mrs. Constance Chamberlain, is re- siding in this city, and is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. I.
