Marks Explaing Si!u:u,i(ln.\ Further ' investigation of the article published in this column yesterday concerning Paul Marks, a German alien. of West Main street, throws new light on the situation and shows that the stories ncerning the prin- cipal have been exaggzerated. Marks stated today that he had declined to inyest in American Liberty Bonds but he denied that he.had been solicited by Lewis Brastow. In this respect he is eccrroborated by Brastow, who says he does not know the man and never asked him to help raise Plainville's quota. Marks denies that he was arrested by an officer of the depart- ment of justice but that he was taken to Hartford in order that the authorities might explain to him the cxact terms of the permit which al- low him, as an enemy alien, a cer- Under the terms of "his permit, he is allowed to tr1avel between his nome and the Hills factory, where he is employed. A short time ago, desiring to pur- chase provisions for his home, he from the limits pre- scribed by his permit and it was for that offense he was taken to Hart- ford and impressed with the seri6uss neéss of repeated actions. Marks also denies that he ever expressed the de- cire to see Germany victorious in the and he is corroborated in. this dtatement also by Brastow.
