NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT. TUESDAY, MAY 21, 1918 ““A great net of mercy drawn through an ocean of unspeakable pain’’ - Your Red Cross Fighting Dollars Your Army and Navy fights to make the “World safe for Democracy.” Your Red Cross fights to make it fit for Democracy. Fights for your soldiers—--yours and your allies--in trench, canteen and hospital. Fights for the little children, to save them for the 4 nations’ upbuildings of tomorrow. Fights for the swarms of homeless, dazed refugees and ‘“‘repatriates” thrown out from the war’s black whirl- pool. Fights the white plague, tuberculosis, that takes a greater toll than lead and steel. Fights in every war stricken country to uphold a wrecked and suffering humanity in its struggle for a free existence. Within this “‘area now reside about 73 per cent. of the total population of Continental United States and Hawaii. It com- prises, in all, 27 states, 43 cities in | other states, the District of Columbia, and the territory of Hawail. East ot the Mississippi the only states not in- cluded are Alabama, Delaware, Flor- \da, Georgia, Tllinois, Mississippi and West Virginia, while west of the Mia- « plssippl the on states included are PASTELRIZING PROOUCES X The best of setected raw milk thor. The annual collection af death sta- tistics from states and cities maintain- ing adequate registration systems was begun by the Census Bureau in 1802, the first report covering the calendar years 1900 to 1904, inclusive, and for cach succeeding year a separate re- port has been published. The original area contained 40 per cent. 1t remained unchanged until 1906, since' which year it has shown an almost uninterrupted increase in geographical extent and in proportion of total population, until at present 1t contains nearly threc-fourths of the , country’s inhabitants. In birth registration highly satisfac- tory progress has been made during the past two years, although there are still a number of states in which ade- quate death registration prevails, but in which the registration of births has not yet reached a sufficiently close ap- proximation to campleteness to justify the acceptance of the local records by the Census Bureau. The birth regis- tration area, as at present constituted, comprises 19 states—the six New Eng- {lana States, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, ‘Wisconsin, Minnesota, TUtah and ‘Washington and the District af Co- lumbia. The area is estimated to con- of the total population of the country, as against about 31 per cent. when the collection of birth statistics was begun, a little more than two years ago, from an area comprising the six New England Btates, New York, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Minnesota and the District of Columbia. This growth, in so short a time, is very gratitying, indeed. It {s, how- ever, unfortunate that in the United States the registration of vitai. phe- nomena has thus far depended, first, upon adequate state or municipal log- islation, and, second, upon the ade- quate enforcement of that legislation. ! As a result, some states and munici- palities maintain efficient registration systems while others do not Untit the matter ts placed under federal control or supervision it is nat likely that reliable birth and degaah records, approximating completend will come into existence throughout the entire United States. ASK PLEDGES T0 BUY WAR STAMPS Every Adult ‘Will Be Solicited During June Campaign Hartford, May 21.—Plans were an- nounced today by the Connecticut War Savings Committee for an inten- sive drive beginning the middle of June and culminating on June 28, when the entire adult population of the state will be expected to register definite pledges covering the amounts of War Savings Stamps to be pur- chased for the remainder of the year. , Under the direction of the treasury department, a country-wide campaign will be conducted in the next few weeks to secure from ecvery loval American a pledge to save regularly and buy War Savings Stamps at peri- odic intervals, as an evidence of his desire to support the Government in the prosecution of the war. June 28 is the date set for those who have ac- cepted this patriotic obligation to stand up and be counted. This does not mean that the War Savings campaign will terminate on that date, but rather that by that expected to have cvidenced their loy- alty by making at least their initial purchase of War Savings Stamps. From that time on the government will count upon a definite weekly in- come from those Who have pledged themselves to invest the results of Secretary McAdoo’'s announcement, ! made public by the Connecticut War Savings Committee, reads in part “It is cssential that the American people economize and save in order to make available to their Govern- ment the money indispensably need- ed tor the war and to release sup- ples and labor required for the pro- !duction of things necessary for our own military forces of the nations as- i sociated with us. “The progress of the war demands constant and increasing sacrifices.
