You left because you wanted the freedom, progress and opportunity which America offers, and which no other country in the whole world offers in such full measure. You left because you wanted a better chance than you could have in the land of your birth. Andsoyoucame across the sea to the land of liberty. The United States welcomed you. The United States gave you the same opportunity and privileges that every American-born citizen had. The United States gave you a part in the government — the right to vote — the right to hold office, to help make and administer Amer- ican laws. Your dutyata time like this is plain, no matter what power or what nation tries to over- whelm us. For this is your country now. Your homes are here. You have raised your children here. You have gone into business, with opportunities you never would have had in any other country. Many of you have amassed huge fortunes, have built great stores and factories and mills,have become bankers and financiers. Knowing all this, can you hold back and not buy America’s bonds when America needs your help? Can you refuse to lend the money this country has enabled you to make? Can you refuse to give whole-sculed support to the country that has given you your homes, your jobs,your opportunities,your fortunes? The enemies of Ameri- ca are attacking YOU when they attack America. They are threatening your homes, your property, your children. They will take YOUR MONEY and YOUR PROPERTY away from you if they win this war. They will despoil YOUR HOMES if they conquer England and Canada and then invade the United States. And remember, this is your children’s country as well as yours. This is where they will live their lives and raise their chil- dren. What chance will they have if this country meets disaster? They are entitled to as good a chance as you have had — will they have it if America is defeate and we are forced to do the will of Ger- many’s military rulers? For the sake of your homes and your children, for the sake of liberty and free institu- tions, for the sake of the country where your children’s children will be born, the United States appeals to you men of foreign birth to help this your country in its hour of need by buying LIBERTY BONDS and buying AS MANY OF THEM AS YOU POSSIBLY CAN.
