RADIATORS FREEZE? | THIS MAY HELP YOU Department oi Gommerce Issues Advice to Owners Washington, March 29.—The sub- ject of anti-freezing solutions for auto- been mobile radiators has Very forcibly to the attention of users of motor vehicles this winter, and many requests for information regard- ing their use have been received by the Bureau of Standards, Department of Commerce. An investigation was undertaken by the bureau to estab- lish the value of these compounds and sufficient data has recently been ob- tained to justify a preliminary state- ment. This work will be continued, tests equivalent to service condition: will be made, and a more comprehen- sive report given at a later date, in time for use during the coming winter. A careful study of this question by the bureau leads to the conclusions based on experiment that, (1) calcium chloride compounds should be used with caution, if at all, on account of their corrosive action; (2) kerosene or similar oils should not be used on ac- count of their inflammability, hizh boiling point, and effect on rubber: (3) mixtures of glycerine can be used, but the price of glycerine, and the need for it in the manufacture of munitions at the present time, should preclude its use; (4) solutions made from either wood alcohol or de- natured alcohol seem at the present time to be the most desirable anti- freezing salutions to use. If the wood alcohol is free from acid there is littls choice between the two alcohols. ‘Wood alcohol costs mare than dena- tured alcohol and is more volatile, but ts lower freezing point allows a less amount to be used, which may coun- teract the above disadvantage. The ideal anti-freezing compaund is one that will prevent freezing of the radiator liquid without injuring either engine or radiator, that will not lose | its non-freezing properties after con- tinued use, and that does not mate- rially change the boiling point of wa- ter when dissalved in it. Kinds of Anti-Freezing Compounds. There are two general types of these compounds—one a solution in water of alcohol or glycerine, or of a mixture of the latter two: the other a solution in water of calclum chloride or the dry salt itself, which contains some- times small amounts of other sub- stances, such as salt, sal ammontac, sugar or svrup.
